Ampule Breaking?

You must first wash your hands with soap and water and make sure they are completely dry. If needed please use gloves. You must also sterilize your work area with alcohol wipes to ensure a clean working surface.

Ensure all the HCG is removed from the top part of the ampule by tapping the glass lightly with your fingernail to move it all into the base of the ampule. Once you break the ampule if there is any medication remaining at the top you must not use it.

If required score the ampule around the neck to make it easier to break. To check if the ampule has been pre-scored there should be a painted band around the narrow end of the neck. If you see this band the ampule has been pre-scored and is ready to open. If not, with a finely serrated knife score the narrow end of the neck to weaken the glass so it can be snapped open.

To break the ampule, open an alcohol wipe and wrap the neck of the ampule between the wipe. Hold the top firmly with your right hand and the bottom with the fingers of your left hand. Break the ampule at the narrow point of the vial (the neck). Light pressure will cause the ampule to break cleanly while too much pressure may cause the ampule to shatter. Be careful!
