Varicose Vein

Varicose Vein - General Information

Varicose Vein is a condition which is characteristic for the veins that have become larger and twisted. The name of the disease generally refers to the veins located in the patient’s legs, but the condition can also develop in other parts of the body. Usually, the veins that are located under the patient’s heart have leaflet valves which help preventing the blood to flow backwards, or to retrograde. In blood circulation through the veins located under the patient’s heart there are involved certain factors that help the blood to reach to the heart and can include leg muscles pump, arterial pulses, and pulmonary aspiration. In Varicose Vein, the patient’s veins become enlarged and the leaflets of the valves no longer function properly, affecting the valves. The most common cause of valve failure is deep vein thrombosis, which can even cause permanent damage to the valves. The blood collects inside the veins causing them to enlarge even more. The condition usually affects the superficial veins of the patient’s legs, especially when standing on the feet, due to high pressure. That is why the disease can cause cosmetic problems, but they can also become painful, especially while standing or walking. There are cases in which it becomes itching and tender, and scratching them can cause ulcer development. In most cases, the main treatment option for Varicose Vein can include non surgical procedures, such as sclerotherapy, elastic stockings, elevating the legs, and exercise, and surgical procedures, which consist in replacing or removing the affected veins.

Varicose Vein – Symptoms

Varicose Vein is more encountered in female patients that in male patients, and can be caused by certain factors which can include pregnancy, obesity, menopause, aging, prolonged standing, leg injury and abdominal straining. The most common signs and symptoms that this condition called Varicose Vein can cause are experienced as aching, heavy legs, which usually gets worse at night and after exercise ankle swelling, a blue skin discoloration around the veins, the skin over the vein can become dry, itchy and thin, that can lead to the appearance of venous eczema, the skin can become darken, a phase called stasis dermatitis, due to the waste products building up in the legs, minor injuries to the area may bleed more than normal and take a long time to heal, large amounts of bleeding from a ruptured vein in some cases the skin above the ankle can become shrinked, a phase called  lipodermatosclerosis, due to the fat underneath the skin that becomes hard, and restless leg syndrome, which is a condition that appears to be a common overlapping clinical syndrome in individuals who suffer from Varicose Vein condition and other chronic venous disorders. In most of the cases the condition is non cancerous but certain factors can lead to severe complication, because of the poor circulation through the affected vein, and can appear as pain, heaviness, inability to walk or stand for long hours, skin conditions such as dermatitis which could predispose skin loss, and bleeding, which can be life threatening.

Varicose Vein – Treatment

Usually, the treatment for Varicose Vein can be non surgical or surgical, depending on the evolution of the disease. In most cases, the surgical approach proved to be more efficient, but some patients prefer the non surgical treatment. There are certain steps to follow so that the condition improves and eventually heals, and can include: elevating the legs, which can provide relief; wearing graduated compression stockings with a pressure more than 30 mmHg, which can correct the patient’s swelling, nutritional exchange, and improves the microcirculation in legs. These compression stockings can also provide relief from the discomfort caused by Varicose Vein. It is very important for a patient who suffers from concurrent arterial disease to exercise in the use of stockings. In most cases, to control and relieve the signs and symptoms caused by the respective medical condition, doctors apply several medicines which can include anti inflammatory drugs, prescribed as ibuprofen or aspirin, and Diosmin 95.

The anti inflammatory medicines are applied as a part of treatment for superficial thrombophlebitis, which are usually applied in combination with graduated compression hosiery. There are cases in which the medicines have caused severe side effects such as intestinal bleeding. That is why is indicated to administrate, in addition to the treatment for thrombophlebitis, anti coagulant medicines, thhrombectoby or sclerotherapy to the affected vein. The sclerotherapy procedure is the most efficient and used therapy to control and treat Varicose Vein. In most cases, this kind of therapy is applied using microfoam sclerosants under ultrasound guidance, which can also be used to treat larger veins that have been affected by the condition, including the greater and shorter saphenous veins. This procedure proved to be less effective than surgery, but is likely to provide a greater effect in veins without reflux. In some particular cases, when the procedure is applied improperly, it can cause complications which can include blood clots and ulceration, but it can also cause anaphylactic reactions, which can easily lead to the death of the individual. Though there are many non surgical treatment options to treat Varicose Vein, most of the doctors choose to treat the patients with surgery. There are some new surgical methods that appeared to treat the condition and can include Endovenous Laser Treatment, radiofrequency ablation, and foam sclerotherapy. That is why the open surgery option can provide long term effects.

There are also cases in which these procedures can cause complications that can be experienced as vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism and wound complications including infections. Some doctors can also choose to apply other procedures to treat the circulating disorder, Varicose Vein; they include endovenous laser and radiofrequency ablation. These procedures require ultrasounds during the operation. These treatment options can also cause complication which can appear as bruising, burns, paresthesia, clinical phlebitis, and an increased risk to develop vein thrombisis and pulmonary embolism. Another concern considering the surgical option is that the disease can recur and this usually takes place over eight to ten years after the first surgery had been performed.
