Allergic Rhinitis – General Information

Allergic Rhinitis triggers a multitude of symptoms, which manifest predominantly in the nose and eyes. Allergic Rhinitis is caused in general by:

• Airborne particles of dust
• Dander
• Plant pollen
• Viruses
• Bacteria
• Irritating substances such as dirt, smoke, pool chlorine, etc.
• Diseases which are sexually transmitted.
• Different allergens
• Trees
• Grass
• Weed pollens
• Mold spores
• House dust
• Cockroaches
• Animal hair or feathers
• Scents
• Cosmetics and other chemicals

The allergies are usually caused by an over sensitive immune response. The immune system has the capacity of protecting our organism from harmful substances (such as bacteria, viruses). When a person comes in contact with substances called allergens, the body produces antibodies to protect the body. When the antibodies are produced as a response to pollen and dust, there are released in the body a series of substances such as: histamine. Usually people who are allergic to different substances present the symptoms for many years; these symptoms may be present during the year or only in some periods of the year. These allergies may lead to other problems such as ear infections or sinusitis. The good news is that as time passes the patients may experience less the symptoms or their severity may decrease In order for the doctor to establish a diagnostic of Allergic Rhinitis he will perform a series of blood test, a physical exam and will ask the patients about the severity of the symptoms. He will also make some allergy tests such as skin tests which are the most common method.

Allergic Rhinitis - Symptoms

It is well known the fact that any medical disorder (including Allergic Rhinitis) can trigger a variety of symptoms. • Sore throat
• Wheezing
• Hives -  in the cases of the very sensitive persons
• Rashes – in the cases of the very sensitive patients
• Watery eyes
• Tender lymph nodes around the ear or the neck – these are not encountered in all of the patients
• Pain
• Sinus headaches
• Ear plugging
• A stuffy nose, possibly with sniffing.
• Feeling grumpy or moody.
• Loss of energy.
• Poor sleep.
• Breathing through your mouth because your nose is blocked.
• A long-lasting (chronic) cough.
• A sense of pressure in an ear or difficulty hearing.
• Discomfort or pain in the face.
• Rubbing the nose, this may cause a crease on the bridge of the nose (allergic crease).

Allergic Rhinitis – Treatment

Like in any other medical condition the primary goal in the treatment of Allergic Rhinitis is to reduce the allergy’s symptoms which are caused by the inflammation of the tissue that is affected. Like in any other type of allergy, the treatment of the Allergic Rhinitis is to avoid the cause, the source of the allergy as much as possible.
