Agitated State – General Information

Agitated State also known as Agitation is a state of anxiety which is accompanied by motor restlessness. The extreme agitation may lead to hyperactivity, confusion and hostility and can appear suddenly or over time. This medical condition may last from a few minutes to several weeks or months.
Approximately half of the persons who suffer from Agitated State are elderly persons and though there are an increasing number of patients who suffer from this medical condition there is known very little about it and its treatment. The risk factors, frequency and the clinical sequelae are not known in detail. The Agitated State was linked often with delirium, anxiety, drug administration and pain. Due to the multifactorial nature of this disease, it is hard to identify the underlying cause. Other sources also associate this disease with liver disease, gastrointestinal bleeding and pneumonia. Other factors that can increase the agitation are fever, stress and pain.
Some of the underlying causes and the disease which can cause this disease are listed below:

Agitated State – Treatment

Here is a list of the most common medication prescribed by doctors to the patients who suffer from Agitated State. These medicines include:

• Abilify –is a psychotropic drug
• Abilify Discmelt –is an antipsychotic medication
• Aripiprazole - is used to treat Schizophrenia, which is a mental disorder
• Aripiprazole solution – is also used in treating Schizophrenia and some symptoms of bipolar disorders.
• Promazine – is used to treat disorders like Schizophrenia, but also mental and emotional disorders.
• Lorazepam
• Haloperidol which treats the delirium
• Opiates which treat the pain
• Benzodiazepines which treat the anxiety

The Agitated State is an urgent situation, in which the persons in the emergency team should operate immediately without a complete diagnosis. When it is possible the patients should be offered choices of treatment, from which to choose.
Patients who are in an Agitated State should be calmed down by verbal means and the doctors should try to establish a cooperative relationship in order to reduce the tension and de-escalate the crisis before the beginning of the more intrusive techniques.
In the cases in which the patients who suffer from Agitated State are not cooperative and these methods are not successful, the use of the emergency medication is recommended. These medications are:

• Ativan – is from the drug group called benzodiazepines. These drugs usually affect the chemicals which exist in the brain and that may become unbalanced and lead to anxiety. This drug should not be used by people who are allergic to it, by persons with breathing problems, glaucoma, kidney and liver disease, persons who are alcohol addicts and by pregnant women.

• Diastat – this drug should not be used by pregnant women or by the persons who have a hypersensitivity to diazepam.

• Diazepam – this drug should not be administered to pregnant women, breast feeding women, children, elderly people, and allergic persons.
• Fluoxetine
• Halodol – is one of the butyrophenone drugs, which are antipsychotics, usually used to treat Schizophrenia. This drug may have dermatologic and autonomic reactions.
• Halodol Decanoate
• Haloperidol - is used in the treatment of nervous, mental and emotional conditions.

• Lorazepam – is an anti - anxiety agent.

• Midazolam - this drug is usually used to induce sleepiness and drowsiness, but also to relieve anxiety before a surgery.
• Midozolam Hydrochloride - this drug is usually used to induce sleepiness and drowsiness, but also to relieve anxiety before a surgery
• Midozolam Injections - this drug is usually used to induce sleepiness and drowsiness, but also to relieve anxiety before a surgery.
