AngioblastomaAngioblastoma – General InformationAngioblastoma or hemangioblastoma is a condition which consists in the presence of a grade I benign tumor of the central nervous system that is typically cystic and can appear throughout the central nervous system. Generally, this tumor is composed of hemangioblasts that are a type of stem cells that, in normal cases, appear in the blood vessels or in the blood cells. Angioblastoma is a disease that appears sporadically; however, there are cases in which the illness can develop from another condition, known as Hippel-Lindau disease or VHL. This disorder is an autosomal dominant pattern. The gene that triggers the condition behaves as a tumor suppressor and that is why a mutation of Hippel-Lindau disease increases the risk of developing a high variety of benign and malignant tumors. These types of tumors usually affect the soft tissues such as the kidneys, central nervous system, retina and adrenal gland. Besides Angioblastoma, the Hippel-Lindau disease can cause other tumors such as pherochormocytomas, retinal angiomas, clear cell renal cancer and renal cysts, pancreatic cysts and pancreatic islet cell tumors, and cyst adenomas of the epididymis. These tumors can also be caused by other factors than the VHL disease. These tumors, whether they are benign as in most of the cases, or malignant, as in rare cases, can cause significant complications, such as angiomas in the brain or spinal cord that can press on nerve or brain tissue. As the tumors grow, the walls of the blood vessels become weak and start to leak, causing damage to the surrounding tissues.Angioblastoma – SymptomsUsually, Angioblastoma causes symptoms depending on the tissue the tumor has affected. If the disease has affected a kidney, it can cause kidney failure, if it affects the liver, it causes liver dysfunction, if it affects the patient’s retina it can cause problems in vision, and if it affects the brain, it can cause severe brain complications, leading eventually to death. There are certain signs and symptoms specific for Angioblastoma, but most of them appear as reactions and side effects of the medications that are applied to treat the condition; they include allergic reactions such as hives, difficulty breathing, and swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. There are cases in which, stopping the treatment can cause certain medical manifestations such as severe depression, aggressive behavior, or thoughts of hurting yourself or others, fast, slow, or uneven heart rate, feeling like passing out, fever, chills, body aches, flu symptoms, pale skin, easy bruising or bleeding, unusual weakness, vision or hearing problems, urinating less than usual or not at all, severe stomach pain, jaundice, which is a yellowing of the skin or eyes, cough with yellow or green mucus, chest pain, pain spreading to the arm or shoulder, nausea, sweating, sudden numbness or weakness, headache, confusion, or problems with vision, speech, or balance, a severe blistering, peeling, and red skin rash. There are several less serious symptoms including dizziness, spinning sensation, headache, tired feeling, muscle pain, nausea, vomiting, or loss of appetite, dry cough, sore throat, diarrhea, hair loss and mild itching or skin rash.Angioblastoma – TreatmentGenerally, there is only one effective medicine available for Angioblastoma and it is called Intron A or Interferon alfa-2b. This kind of medicine is made from human proteins and acts by helping the body fight viral infections. There are cases in which doctors use this medicine to treat other severe diseases such as hairy cell leukemia; malignant melanoma; follicular lymphoma; Kaposi’s sarcoma usually triggered by AIDS or other types of genital warts. Doctors can also use Interferon alfa-2b to treat hepatitis B and C. During the therapy, to successfully heal Angioblastoma, doctors administrate the medicine in combination with another drug known as Ribavirin or Rebetol. There are cases in which the health care provider can choose in which condition to apply the medicine. It is very important to know that the Interferon alfa-2b medicine can be harmful to an unborn baby, or, in severe cases, can lead to miscarriage. Doctors should not administrate the drug if the patient is pregnant, especially if she already takes Ribavirin. Usually, doctors advise female patients to use two forms of effective birth control methods while applying the combination therapy and they continue like this for at least six months after the therapy ends. There are cases in which, a male patient who fathers a child and also takes Interferon alfa-2b can determine severe birth problems to the unborn baby. It is very important to use a condom in order to prevent pregnancy during the treatment trial. The patient must use condoms for at least two months after he stops taking the medicine combination. A patient should not take the Interferon alfa-2b if he presents allergies to interferon, or if he suffers of autoimmune hepatitis, or severe liver dysfunctions. It is also important for the patient not to take the combination of Ribavirin and interferon if he is allergic to one of them, or if he suffers of severe kidney diseases, a blood cell disorder, if she is pregnant, or if the patient is a male and his female partner carries a pregnancy. Before taking the treatment for Angioblastoma, the patient should inform the doctor about all his medical conditions and about other medication he is using. There are certain restrictions in applying the medicine to treat Angioblastoma, and those can include autoimmune hepatitis, severe liver problems, severe kidney disease, a blood cell disorder such as thalassemia or sickle cell anemia, allergies to interferon and Ribavirin, pregnancy, diabetes, cancer, bone marrow suppression, a bleeding disorder, a thyroid disorder, breathing problems such as COPD or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, history of depression, mental illness, suicidal thoughts, an autoimmune disorder such as psoriasis, arthritis, lupus, colitis or other intestinal disorders and if the patient has recently received an organ transplant. If the medicine or the combination of medicines is administered improperly, the presence of Angioblastoma can cause the appearance of other more severe disorders with life threatening complications. |
