Bacterial ConjunctivitisBacterial Conjunctivitis – General InformationBacterial Conjunctivitis, also known as pink eye, is considered an inflammation or infection of the conjunctiva (the transparent membrane) that lines the eyelid and small areas of the eyeball. The cause of Bacterial Conjunctivitis is usually a bacterial infection, but can appear from an allergic reaction or, in the newborns case, an incompletely opened tear duct. Pink eye makes you have the sensation that you have got something in one or both of your eyes that just can't go away. When you get up in the beginning of the day, the eyes can seem to be pasted shut from the abnormal discharge coming from the eyes. The white areas of the eyes usually begin to have a pink color, and you may not see as good and clear as you did in other days. The eye inflammation leads to the small blood vessels in the conjunctiva to progress to a more prominent stage, getting in a pink or red cast to the white areas of the eyes. Pink eye or red eye is the term generally used to refer to all types of conjunctivitis. Event if the eye inflammation of the conjunctivitis makes it an irritating disorder, there are few cases in which affects the sight. If you think you suffer with pink eye, you can take measures to relieve the discomfort. Because the pink eye condition is contagious, it is diagnosed and treated early, preventing any appearance in other patients. This is particularly important for small age children, who usually develop easily the both conditions of the disease, the viral and Bacterial Conjunctivitis.Bacterial Conjunctivitis – SymptomsBacterial Conjunctivitis is considered an infection provoked by bacteria such as staphylococci, streptococci or haemophilus. These types of organisms can get in the eye from the patient's own skin or the upper respiratory tract or they can be caught from other patient suffering with conjunctivitis. Bacterial Conjunctivitis, because of the usual pus-producing bacteria (pyogenic) causes visible grittiness or irritation and a stringy, opaque, grey or yellowish mucopurulent eye discharge which can cause the matting of the lids, getting them to stick together, particularly after sleeping. Other specific symptoms that could appear in Bacterial Conjunctivitis is severe crusting of the infected eye and the areas around, including the skin. The eye discharge is not a main cause to the diagnosis, contrary to popular belief. Many other bacteria like moraxella, can lead to a non-exudative, and not really persistent conjunctivitis without the redness symptom. The gritty or the scratchy feeling is in some cases sensed too much, and the patients insist that they must have a foreign body in the eye. The acute pyogenic stage infections can become even painful. This type of conjunctivitis generally affects only one eye but can spread easily to the other eye. If there appears a worsening of the symptoms of the conjunctivitis even it was applied a safe treatment or if the vision gets unclearly, then there must get another consultation with your doctor, which must be requested by the patient, even if treatment is being over. Good hygiene of hands and face is very important in preventing the developing of any type of conjunctivitis.Bacterial Conjunctivitis – TreatmentConjunctivitis in most of the cases requires medical support, but the right treatment depends on the cause of the disease. For the allergic type of disorder, the first measure is to use cool water which constricts capillaries, but also can be used artificial tears which in particular cases relieve the discomfort in mild stages. In the chronic cases, non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs and antihistamines can be prescribed by the doctor. There are also patients with persistent allergic conjunctivitis who can require topical steroid drops. Bacterial Conjunctivitis in the most of the cases cured with antibiotic eye drops or ointments that treats a large range of bacteria, and includes chloramphenicol or fusidic acid. But the effects on patients shows that this does not change the symptom severity and gains only reduces the improvement duration from an average of 5 days, when the disease is untreated, to 3 days for those who have taken immediate antibiotics. Depending on the antibiotics, which have approximately the same duration as those immediately starting treatment with 4 days duration and have more than half from the two-week clinic reattendance rate. The treatment for Bacterial Conjunctivitis includes medicines like cortisporin ophthalmic suspension drops suspension, maxitrol ointment, neocin ointment, ocuflox solution, poly-dex drops, quixin eye drops. Cortisporin ophthalmic suspension drops are used to treat eye infections and the characteristic symptoms, such as redness, irritation, and discomfort, caused by some bacteria. It can be also used for other disorder determined by the doctor. Cortisporin ophthalmic suspension drops consists in a combination of two antibiotics and a corticosteroid, the hydrocortisone. The antibiotics have the effect of slowing or killing the growth of sensitive bacteria in the eye, and the corticosteroid has the effect of reducing the inflammation. Maxitrol ointment is also used treat eye infections and its symptoms and consists in a combination of two antibiotics and a corticosteroid, called dexamethasone and has the same effect as the suspension drops, by slowing and killing the bacteria in the eye. Neocin ointment is an antibiotic that treats eye infections, by killing the bacteria. Ocuflox solution is used to treat and prevent eye infections including conjunctivitis, or pink eye, and corneal ulcers provoked by some bacteria involving patients with the age less than a year and older. Ocuflox solution consists in an ophthalmic fluoroquinolone antibiotic, which have the effect of stopping or preventing any bacterial infections of the eyeball by killing any susceptible bacteria and then inhibiting their growth. Quixin eye drops consist in a fluoroquinolone eye drop and have the effect of blocking bacteria to reproduce in the eye. The poly-dex drops have the same consistency and effect as the maxitrol ointment, which stops the growing of the bacteria and kills it. Bacterial Conjunctivitis is usually not a serious problem and in most of the cases will go away by itself. But the patient should still have to consult his health care provider. If the Bacterial Conjunctivitis gets to a chronic stage and it is left untreated, can lead to a permanently eye damage. |
