BursitisBursitis – General InformationBursitis refers to an inflammation of one or more bursae (which is a small fluid-filled sac made of white fibrous tissue) in the body. The bursae are localized in the points of the internal functionaries, such as muscles and tendons, slide over the bone. There are hundreds of bursae all over the body which make the movements painless. When they are affected the movements become painful and rough. The Bursitis is usually caused by the repeated movements and excessive pressure and the most often affected areas are the elbows and the knees as they are repetitively used and they rest upon more than any other parts of the body. Another cause of this medical disorder is the inflammatory condition such as rheumatoid arthritis or scoliosis (the scoliosis may cause this medical condition to the shoulders). Main causes of this medical condition are the traumatic injuries, which usually leads to the swelling of this condition, which causes irritation. If this medical condition develops at the buttocks, is probably due to the prolonged sitting on a hard surface. The bursitis which develops in the hips is caused by arthritis and hip injuries, but also the prolonged sitting and standing may cause it. In the case that this medical condition develops in the knees there appears an egg-shaped bump in the front of the knees. This is the result of too much kneeling such as installing tiles, scrubbing a floor, gardening, etc. This disease may also appear in the ankles, due to the improper footwear, or prolonged walking in incommode shoes.Bursitis – SymptomsIt is well known the fact that any medical disorder (including Bursitis) can trigger a variety of symptoms. Bursitis – TreatmentThe treatment method depends on the severity of the inflammation and varies depending on the type of the infection (such as a bacterial infection in the bursa). In the case that the Bursitis is caused by other medical conditions such as gout and arthritis, then the treatment is more difficult. The principal goal of the Bursitis treatment is to prevent further flare-ups of arthritic scenes or gout attacks, the patients may do this by having a proper diet and by making daily exercises. The treatment of this medical condition may also drain the infected bursa, and this needs an antibiotic treatment. In order to decrease or to avoid the swelling of the affected areas, the patients should keep ice packs on the inflamed zones. Another important thing in the treatment of the Bursitis is a proper sleep, rest. The patients should also try to limit their activity of the affected joint and to place an elastic bandage around it.
