Condylomata Acuminata – General Information

Condylomata Acuminata (also known Condyloma, Condylomata Acuminata, and Venereal Warts) is a contagious disease, which is transmitted sexually and it is caused by a human papillomavirus (which is also known as HPV). This infection can be spread by direct skin to skin contact which usually happens during oral, genital and anal sex with a partner who is infected. The most common sign of the infection is the genital wart and this can be caused by the strains known as 6, 11, 30, 42, 42 44, 45, 51, 51 and 54 of the human papillomavirus. The strains number 6 and 11 are the ones which produce the majority of the infections (approximately 90%). This infection can lead to cervical cancer.

The genital warts usually occur in cluster and can be tiny, but they can also spread into large masses in the penis area or in the genital one. In the women who are infected with this virus, the warts usually develop on the outside and inside of the vagina, from the cervix to the womb (also known as uterus), and also around the anus. In the men who have this infection the genital warts appear on the tip of the penis, but they may also be localized on the shaft of the penis, on the scrotum and around the anus. In very rare cases genital warts develop in the mouth and throat of a person, but this in the cases of persons who have had oral sex. After having sex with an infected person, the cells are invaded by HPV, and the invasion is followed by a latency period. If a person has sex with another one, who’s in the incubation period it can still be at a risk of developing the infection called Condylomata Acuminata.

 Condylomata Acuminata – Symptoms

It is well known the fact that any medical disorder (including Condylomata Acuminata) can trigger a variety of symptoms. Therefore, some of this medical condition's most uncommon symptoms have not been listed (mentioned) here. Here is a list of the most common symptoms that a person who suffers from Condylomata Acuminata, may experience:

• Hard spots can develop during the first three weeks until three months from the exposure.
• In women:
• Warts develop on the lips of the vagina, inside the vagina and around the anus.
• Anogenital warts which can appear are usually itchy.
• Cervical warts (these are flat lesions which in their first stages are invisible).
• It can lead to abnormal results in the Pap smear test.
• Burning.
• Tenderness.
• Women who have the genital warts inside the vagina can experience bleeding after sexual intercourse and also abnormal vaginal discharge.
• If the warts are on the urethral opening urinary obstruction may appear and also bleeding.
• In men:
• Small, flesh-colored or gray swellings in your genital area
• Several warts close together that take on a cauliflower shape
• Itching or discomfort in your genital area
• Bleeding with intercourse

In men there are many other conditions which have the same symptoms, such as Tyson’s glands, Fordy spots, Pearly penile papules, this is why it is important to discuss the matter with the your doctor. Pregnancy usually triggers a HPV infection, in a person whose infection was in the incubation period.

Condylomata Acuminata – Treatment

The Condylomata Acuminata can be diagnosed by doing a Pap smear test, because this test reveals infected abnormal cells which can lead to cancer. Condylomata Acuminata can lead to some precancerous changes in the cervix, these changes are usually recognized in the Pap smear test
The Condylomata Acuminata usually disappears without any specific treatment, but in some cases the patient develops a fleshy, small raised growth and the doctors do not known if this fleshy growth disappears or it continues to grow. The doctors prescribe the treatment depending on the location and size of the warts, but they may also take in consideration other factors, here are some treatment methods:

• Imiquimod – is a cream that has to be applied on the affected area
• Podophylin anti-mitotic solution which has also to be applied on the affected are, but it needs to be washed off after a period of time
• Podofilox solution which has to be applied on the affected are but not washed off.
• Fluorouracil cream
• Trichloroacetic acid – which is also known as TCA
• Pulsed dye laser
• Liquid nitrogen cryosurgery – this operation can remove the small warts by freezing them.
• Electric cauterization - this operation can remove the small warts by burning them.
• Laser cauterization

Doctors recommend the women not to use Podophyllin and Podofilox during pregnancy, because these substances are absorbed by the skin and can lead to birth defects in the newborn, they recommend the same thing in the case of the fluorouracil cream, but this cream should also not be used when trying to get pregnant. Surgery is used only in the cases when the doctors have to remove large warts.
If there still appear warts after removing them with any of the methods described above, doctors usually inject an antiviral drug called Interferon-alpha in the warts in order to cure them. All the treatment methods listed above remove only the warts not the HPV virus, this is the reason for the appearance of warts after the treatment.

• Podofilox Topical - this drug is a skin medication which is used to remove the genital warts. It used to treat warts localized on the external skin of the penis and vagina
• Veregen – this drug should not be used for more then sixteen weeks. This drug is used in the treatment of external genital and anal warts in adult patients.
