Coronary Artery Disease

Coronary Artery Disease – General Information

Coronary Artery Disease, also known as atherosclerosis, is considered to be caused by the repetitive accumulation of fatty build-ups on the patient’s coronary arteries. This kind of build-ups slowly narrows the coronary arteries access and decreases the amount of blood that gets to the heart. It is a known fact that a decreased level of blood that gets to the heart can cause chest pain, also known as angina, shortness of breath and many other unpleasant symptoms. There are many cases in which the fatty deposits create a complete blockage of the artery leading to a heart attack. Coronary Artery Disease can also block the arteries that supply the heart not only with blood, but with oxygen and many nutrients. Due to the fact that the disease’s symptoms appear after a long time, it can progress unnoticed, leading to a sudden heart attack, which is, in most of the cases, deadly for the individual. Changing the lifestyle is a first measure to help preventing the disease to appear. Coronary Artery Disease begins in an early phase, in childhood, when it starts to damage the interior layer of the coronary artery, and can be caused by several factors such as smoking, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, some other medical conditions, such as diabetes, radiation therapy to the chest, which is applied for many types of cancer. After damage has been done to the inner layer of the artery, the fatty substances start to accumulate, eventually, causing the heart attack to appear. The fatty build-ups can even break the affected area of the artery.

Coronary Artery Disease – Symptoms

The main signs and symptoms of the Coronary Artery Disease are related to the ones of a regular heart attack, also known as myocardial infraction, which require professional medical assistance at once. They can include pain or discomfort in other areas of the upper body including the arms, difficulty breathing or shortness of breath, sweating or cold sweat, fullness, indigestion, or choking feeling, also known as heartburn, nausea or vomiting, light headedness, dizziness, severe weakness or anxiety and rapid or irregular heart beats. The main symptom of the disease is the chest pain or angina. This symptoms consists in a feeling of discomfort, heaviness, aching, burning, fullness, squeezing or pain, numbness, and so on. These kinds of symptoms are similar to the ones caused by indigestion or heartburn. The pain chest is not only present in the chest area, but in the left shoulder, arms, neck, back or jaw. Female patients usually have other symptoms than the male patients.  In case of a heart attack that affects a female patient, she can experience signs and symptoms such as pain and discomfort in the chest area, left arm or back, an uncommonly rapid heartbeat, shortness of breath and nausea or fatigue. There are cases in which the heart can not provide enough blood for the other parts of the body, when symptoms of heart failure such as severe fatigue with exertion, swelling of the ankles and feet and shortness of the breath, can appear. The main complication of the Coronary Artery Disease is heart attack and the first symptoms can include crushing pain in the chest, in the left arm and shortness of the breath.

Coronary Artery Disease – Treatment

In most of the cases Coronary Artery Disease can be improved by minor lifestyle changes such as stopping the smoking, eating healthy products and making as much exercise every day. There are cases, in which the treatment can consist in a medicine trial, with specific drugs prescribed by the doctor to improve the blood flow. They can consist in cholesterol drugs, aspirin, beta blockers, nitroglycerin, angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors and calcium channel blockers. Drugs such as Statins and Fibrates are considered cholesterol medicines, which can help increase the patient’s level of high density lipoproteins. Due to the fact that a low level of lipoproteins can increase the amount of fatty deposits on the arteries, the cholesterol medications act by stopping, slowing and even reversing the build-up process. Another medicine used to cure Coronary Artery Disease is aspirin, or any other blood thinner, which has the effect of reducing clotting, which is the main cause of the obstruction of the patient’s coronary arteries. aspirin can also prevent heart attacks. Beta blockers are also used to treat Coronary Artery Disease, which have the effect of slowing the patient’s heart rate or decreasing their blood pressure, which also decreases the heart's need of oxygen. These types of drugs help prevent future heart attacks as well. Nitroglycerin drugs are administered as tablets, sprays or patches which have the effect of controlling the chest pain by enlarging the patient’s coronary arteries and reducing his heart's need of blood. Angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors are a type of drugs that decrease the body’s blood pressure and generally prevent the evolution of this kind of arterial condition. They also prevent heart attacks. Calcium channel blockers are a type of drugs that are used to relax the muscles in the surrounding area of the coronary arteries, open up the vessels and increase the blood flow to the heart and brain.

Calcium channel blockers can also control the blood pressure of patients with Coronary Artery Disease. If the drug treatment options are not effective, the doctor can apply several procedures to improve and restore the patient’s blood flow. They can include angioplasty and stent placement, coronary bypass surgery, coronary brachytherapy and laser revascularization. Angioplasty and stent placement or percutaneous coronary revascularization is a procedure widely undergone by patients who suffer from Coronary Artery Disease. During this procedure, the surgeon inserts a catheter, a thin tube, inside the affected area of the patient’s artery. Then, a wire containing a deflated balloon is inserted in the catheter. After the balloon has been inflated it compresses the fatty build ups against the artery walls. In some cases, stents are left there to release a drug that is meant to keep the artery enlarged. In the coronary artery bypass procedure the doctor makes a graft to bypass blocked coronary arteries with another blood vessel, making the blood to flow with greater ease in the affected area. The laser revascularization procedure consists in a laser beam which is used to create tiny new channels in the wall of the heart muscle.

I am a "Free Shipping for Life" customer, and couldn't be happier with the service I have received from this company. The handling of this order was especially pleasing to me in that when shipping was delayed four or five days on an item, not only was I notified via email, I received a personal phone call to inform me of the order's status. The items shipped as scheduled, and I received them within ten days.
