Deep Vein Thrombosis

Deep Vein Thrombosis – General Information

Deep Vein Thrombosis is a disease characterized by the formation of a blood clot inside of a vein located deeply in the body. These clots appear when the blood changes its integrity and clumps together. The area which is more often affected is the lower leg, but this disorder can affect any other part of the body. When the blood clot forms in a deep vein it can move and even travel through the blood system in the body. If the clot reaches the lungs it can influence the regular flow of the blood and even block it. If such thing happens, the patient can experience sudden death. The blood clots can also appear in the veins which are closer to the surface of the skin; but, in this case, they do not cause any serious problems and they do not lead to the appearance and development of Deep Vein Thrombosis.  The most common causes which lead to the appearance of the blood clots are the following: damage of a vein’s inner structure: this alteration can be the result of some chemical, physical or biological injuries. These injuries can be caused by certain inflammations, surgeries or an autoimmune response of the body to certain factors; slow flow of the blood: this can happen because of the lack of motion in the case of certain people. Such problems are more likely to appear after a surgery, when a person is sick and he can not get out of the bed or when a person travels a lot.

Deep Vein Thrombosis – Symptoms

Deep Vein Thrombosis is characterized by some signs and symptoms which are also common for a pulmonary embolism. However, both disorders are extremely severe and it should consult a doctor as soon as possible if you notice the appearance of any of the following complications: swelling of the affected leg; swelling along a vein in the affected leg; tenderness in the affected leg; pain during walking or just standing; warmth in the affected leg or just a specific area of the affected leg; discoloration or redness of the affected leg; sudden shortness of breath; fast heart rate. However, only about one half of those who suffer from Deep Vein Thrombosis present any symptoms at all. Although anybody can develop this disorder, there are certain factors which can increase the risk to suffer from Deep Vein Thrombosis. The most important and the most common of these factors are the following: some inherited blood problems, which increase the risk of the appearance of blood clots; excessive usage of hormones or birth control pills; serious injury of a vein after a surgery or another trauma, such as a broken bone; cancer treatment; obesity; old age: this can maximize the risks, but the disorder can affect anybody, no matter the age; a venous catheter; a recent pregnancy; a recent birth. If you experience more than one of the symptoms listed above, you should consult a doctor as soon as possible.

Deep Vein Thrombosis – Treatment

Before establishing the diagnosis, your doctor will probably inform about your medical history and he will recommend you to take some tests. In what concerns your medical history, the doctor will ask for information about the overall health, the recent surgeries, any drugs you have been taking recently and whether you suffer of cancer or not. The physical test consists of a short examination of your legs, your blood pressure, your lungs and your heart for any signs of Deep Vein Thrombosis. Other tests which are usually performed in order to obtain a sure diagnosis are discussed below. Ultrasound test: the results of this test consist of some pictures which represents the blood flowing through the veins and the arteries in the affected leg. Venography: this kind of test is recommended when the ultrasound test does not offer clear results. This test consists of injecting a substance in the vein and then taking an x-ray of the leg. The substance will make the vein visible and the doctor can observe whether the blood flows normally or not.

D-dimer test: this test gives information about the possibility of the development o blood clots. It analyzes a substance which is released in the blood when a clot dissolves. If the level of this substance is high, then the patient is more likely to presents deep blood clots. The main purposes of the treatment which is administrated in the case of Deep Vein Thrombosis are to stop the development and growth of the existing clot, to prevent to arrival of the clot to the lungs and to diminish the possibility of having a new blood clot. A common way of treating Deep Vein Thrombosis is the administration of medicines. The most common types of drugs which are administrated are the following:

  • Anticoagulants: these substances are used in order to reduce the possibility of the blood to form clots; in addition, they stop the existing clots from getting bigger but hey do not have the power to break up these blood clots. These drugs can be injected under the skin or they can be administrated orally or using s tube which is introduced into a vein. This kind of treatment usually lasts for a couple of months, but there are some situations in which the length of the treatment can be modified: the period can be shorter when the clop appeared after a surgery and it can be longer when the patient suffered from this disorder previously or when he also suffers of other diseases, such as cancer.
  • Thrombin inhibitors:
  • Thrombolytics

Another way of treating Deep Vein Thrombosis is using a filter, which is inserted in a big vein. It collects the blood clots which break before they reach the lungs. However, this method can not stop the appearance of new clots.  In order to avoid the appearance of Deep Vein Thrombosis, people should try to organize better their life-style, they should visit their doctor regularly and they should take all the medicines they are prescribed.

  Ordered Coumadin

Returned to live once again in Florida from Australia. Had expected to stay 3 months and sell my Condo. Found out very quickly that there isn't a market for me to sell at present .I was running out of medication and with no insurance put in a order for my stock meds. from my on-line pharmacy .Even with a discount. Payment was higher than what I pay in Australia but at least I saved the Doctors consultation fee .The medication arrived and the stress associated with my condition went .Is there anyone out there that wants to buy a Condo on a golfcourse. Has a Wallmart within walking distance and a new Hospital being built opposite .
