Generally, there is no cure for Dermatographism, but in most of the cases, the patient reports that the disease improved or even disappeared on its own. The healing process of the condition usually depends on each patient. There are cases in which Dermatographism did not cure at all, nor has it improved. But, there are several medications that can be prescribed by the doctors to relieve the signs and symptoms of the disease, which can include hives, welts, itching or skin redness. The main treatment for this medical condition is the antihistamines, which act by blocking the production of histamine, the main cause of symptom appearance. There are also some over the counter medicines that can be recommended to treat Dermatographism and can include diphenhydramine prescribed as Benadryl, chlorpheniramine prescribed as Chlor-Trimeton, clemastine prescribed as Tavist and loratadine as Alavert or Claritin. There are few antihistamines that can cause side effects, such as drowsiness, including, for example, diphenhydramine, chlorpheniramine and clemastine. Loratadine is the only medication for this type of medical condition that does not cause any side effects at all. There are also other medicines that are used to treat Dermatographism.

If the patient suffers from a severe form of the disease the doctor can prescribe an oral treatment trial with corticosteroids, such as prednisone, which can improve symptoms like swelling, redness and itching. In most cases, the hereditary form of the disease can not be treated. But, nowadays doctors recommend a long term treatment trial which includes certain androgens, such as danazol, prescribed as danocrine, which has the effect of controlling the levels of proteins in the bloodstream. When a patient suffers from a chronic attack of Dermatographism, he requires an injection with adrenaline (epinephrine), which has to be done immediately. If the same patient has repeated attacks of the disease, the doctor can prescribe adrenaline and teach him how to administrate it. In some cases doctors can also prescribe medicines that are meant to relieve the symptoms of this disorder. Carbinoxamine Maleate Extended-Release Capsules is a medicine that helps treating allergies that present symptoms such as runny nose, watery/itchy eyes, rash, or hives. The medicine acts blocking the histamine action on the skin, reducing the symptoms that accompany the allergic reaction. This medicine is contraindicated if the patient is allergic to any ingredient in Carbinoxamine Maleate Extended-Release Capsules or he or she is currently taking sodium oxybare or monoamine oxidase inhibitors. The Histex CT Extended-Release Capsules and Palgic medicines are prescribed by the doctor to relieve the symptoms caused by an allergic reaction, such as runny nose, watery/itchy eyes, rash, or hives. They can also be used to treat many other skin conditions. Both have the effect of blocking the histamine secretion, thus reducing the unpleasant symptoms. It is recommended to seek medical advice as soon as possible, because if the disease is left untreated it can cause severe skin complications.
