FeverFever – General InformationFever, also known as pyrexia or ague, is considered a usual medical symptom that consists in an abnormal increase in the patient’s internal body temperature to levels above the regular ones (37 – 38 °C). In medical terms, the disease manifests by a temporary elevation in the patient’s body thermoregulatory normal level, in most of the cases, by one to two degrees Celsius. If the disease appears in older patients it is not considered threatening, just uncomfortable, unless it reaches more that 39°C. If the Fever affects younger patients, such as babies, even the smallest deviation from the normal set point can indicate the presence of a serious condition. Due to the fact that the disease can appear along with many other conditions, the signs and symptoms vary depending on a certain disease. In most of the cases, the disorder goes away by itself in almost two to three days. There are cases in which the Fever does not require any treatment with medications, because they usually cause severe side effects, particularly if the patient is young. There are many conditions with which the disease can appear. The most common include influenza, which is an infectious disease, common cold, malaria, infectious mononucleosis, gastroenteritis, certain skin inflammations, such as boils, pimples, acne, or abscess, immunological conditions such as lupus erythematosus, sarcoidosis, inflammatory bowel conditions, tissue destruction, which can appear in hemolysis, surgery, infraction, crush syndrome, rhabdomyolysis, or cerebral hemorrhage, cancers, such as Hodgkins disease, metabolic conditions such as gout and Porphyria, thrombo embolic processes.Fever – SymptomsAll the symptoms and signs specific for this medical condition called Fever are different and various and depend on the causes that lead to the appearance of it. Usually, this disorder is accompanied by chills that occur when the thermostat of the body is raised by the brain. As a result, the organism’s responses are the shivering that should raise the temperature of the body. Once a person starts shivering, he or she will start to feel worm because the temperature goes up. When Fever is really high, the patient will begin to sweat in excess. This is why dehydration of the organism may be a matter of complaint in many cases. Sweating may also occur in mild or moderate body temperature and not only when it is high. A sign that a person suffers from this medical condition is that he or she will drink more liquids than usual. If the temperature of the organism goes significantly over 39-40oC, then damages of the brain can result. This involves a higher risk of death. In most of the cases, the disease can cause signs and symptoms such as headache, muscle aches, lack of appetite and general weakness. In cases in which the disease causes higher temperature, signs and symptoms can appear such as hallucinations, confusion, irritability and convulsions. There are cases in which the disease can cause febrile seizures, which can appear as brief loss of consciousness and convulsions. The seizures are caused by other diseases such as roseola, swollen glands or rash.Fever – TreatmentIn most cases the prescribed treatment for the patient depends on the cause of the Fever. The doctor can prescribe antibiotics for bacterial infection, which can include pneumonia and strep throat. If the cause of the disease is a virus, the doctor may recommend rest and plenty of liquids, treatment that can be applied in patients who suffer from stomach infections, such as gastroenteritis, or mononucleosis. There are cases in which the doctor can treat Fever with over the counter or nonprescription medicines, which can include acetaminophen or Tylenol, or ibuprofen, or Advil, Motrin, which have the effect of lowering the disease’s signs and symptoms. If the patient is an adult, the doctor can recommend aspirins, which are definitely contraindicated in children, because they can lead to the appearance of another rare and life threatening condition, also known as Reye’s syndrome. If any patient suffers from a low grade form of the disease, it is not recommended to try to lower the temperature, because by doing this, the illness can be prolonged, or its signs and symptoms can be masked. This thing can make diagnosing the exact cause more challenging. In fact, scientists say that if the Fever is being treated aggressively, the disease can interfere with the patient’s immune system response. That is why, if the patient produces a low grade for of the disease, the body can help eliminate the virus, because it is said that viruses thrive at cool temperatures, especially the ones that cause colds and many other respiratory conditions. There are cases in which the treatment for Fever is not indicated, and the affected patients have to keep themselves properly hydrated, because the dehydration caused by the low grade form of the temperature can be more dangerous than the normal form. In most cases, drinking water is recommended, but there is also a risk of developing hyponatremia, due to the excessive water. Due to this fact, some patients usually drink sports drinks or products that are produced particularly for these cases. Generally, patients who suffer from Fever, apply the treatment trials to relieve the signs and symptoms that cause discomfort. The disease can also increase the patient’s heart beats and metabolism, which is dangerous especially in older patients who suffer from other heart conditions. There are cases in which the disease even causes delirium. That is why the doctor has to know the exact risks and side effects that the prescribed therapy can trigger. It is very important to control the disease, because it can easily progress to hyperpyrexia, which can cause tissue damage, leading to the death of the individual. The treatment for the disease is generally applied to lower the temperature, and this can be easily done by taking antipyretics. In most of the cases, the main procedure is applying wet cloths pads on the patient’s forehead. The heat loss can also appear from convection, radiation and evaporation. The water used to cool the temperature should not be too cold, because it can cause vasoconstriction and it can prevent the heat loss. |
