Follicular Lymphoma

Follicular Lymphoma – General Information

Follicular Lymphoma is a widely spread form of Lymphoma, as about 25% of all patients who suffer from this type of cancer present the follicular form of this disease. This cancerous medical condition is known to affect the patient’s B-lymphocytes (a form of blood cells). Although most patients who present this medical disorder are about 60 years old, this condition can also develop during the early adulthood. This disease affects both female patients and male patients like-wise. This medical condition is more common in Europe and in the U.S.A. (especially in the North America) than in Asian countries. The exact causes that trigger the appearance of this medical condition have not been clearly established. Like most other cancerous medical conditions, Follicular Lymphoma is not an infectious disease; this means that a patient cannot pass the disease on to another individual. Depending on how many groups of the patient’s lymph nodes have been affected, the location of the lymph nodes and whether the patient’s liver or bone marrow are also affected by this disease, physicians have staged this medical condition. In patients who present the first stage of this condition, only one group of lymph nodes are affected (this means that only one area of the organism is affected). Patients with stage 2 present more groups of lymph nodes that are located either in the lower half or in the upper half of the organism. In stage 3, the disease has affected even more groups of lymph nodes than in stage 2; furthermore, the nodes are located below and above the diaphragm. Patients with stage 4 (the most severe stage of this medical condition) present a disease that has spread beyond the organism’s lymph nodes. Other body parts are also affected (mostly the patient’s lungs, liver, bones, and so on).

Follicular Lymphoma – Symptoms

Like most other medical disorders, Follicular Lymphoma is a clinical condition that triggers a set of medical signs and / or symptoms that are known to generally accompany this disorder. Among the very first symptoms of this medical condition consists in a painless swelling that is located either in the patient’s armpit, neck, or groin (scientists have determined that the swelling is caused by the presence of enlarged lymph nodes). In the later (more severe) stages of this medical condition, more than one group of lymph nodes is affected; thus, numerous swellings start to appear. In the most severe clinical cases that involved patients who suffered from this medical condition, some of them complained of excessive tiredness, abnormal loss of appetite, and so on. Other common symptoms and signs that have been associated with the presence of Follicular Lymphoma are known to generally include abnormally high temperatures, night sweats, and rapid weight loss. The symptoms that we have listed here are commonly called B symptoms. However, all patients ought to be aware of the fact that Follicular Lymphoma (like most other cancers) occurs innocuously. The highest number of patients who develop this medical condition state that their disorder seemed pretty harmless in its early stages. If you develop any of the signs and / or symptoms that have been listed in this chapter, you should not panic, as these symptoms are common with some other medical disorders (harmless conditions). In order to clear your doubts, we recommend you to seek professional medical care at once. Your personal physician will be able to determine whether you are suffering from lymphoma or not.

Follicular Lymphoma - Treatment

If the patient who suffers from Follicular Lymphoma does not present any signs or symptoms, an immediate therapy might not be necessary. However, regular visits to your general health care provider or to your cancer specialist should be given the necessary attention. In this way, you will make sure that as soon as a therapy is needed (as soon as you develop the symptoms of this disorder) you will receive it. In this chapter we seek to present you the most common therapy options that patients who present Follicular Lymphoma generally undergo. However, we can only give you a set of basis pieces of information regarding this matter. For further, professional advice, you should seek the help of your personal health care specialist. Radiotherapy is commonly employed in the therapy of patients who suffer from Follicular Lymphoma. This treatment option uses rays of high-energy which are able to effectively kill the harmful cancer cells. This therapy method is effective against cancerous cells without harming the healthy cells too much. This form of treatment is generally prescribed to patients who are suffering from Stage 1 or from Stage 2 of this medical condition. If a patient who suffers from one of the early stages of this medical disorder is granted professional therapy in due time, he or she has several chances of becoming cured. This form of therapy gives even better results if the patient also undergoes Chemotherapy.

A patient who undergoes Chemotherapy is bound to take cytotoxic (anti-cancer) medications that are supposed to kill the harmful cancer cells. Such medicines are given to a patient who suffers from stage 3 or from Stage 4 of this medical condition (in clinical cases where the disorder also affects other organs). The good news is that this particular medical condition (Follicular Lymphoma) has proven to be quite sensitive to this therapy method. The most popular medical products that are taken in by patients who undergo Chemotherapy include: Fludarabine, steroids, Chlorambucil, and so on. A popular regimen of Chemotherapy medical products that is quite effective in the case of patients with this medical condition is called R-CVP. This medication regimen consists of the chemotherapy drugs Cyclophosphamide, the monoclonal antibody Rituximab, the steroid Prednisolone and Vincristine. Even if patients who present Follicular Lymphoma are known to give benefic responses to the therapy with the medications that we have listed above, there is a risk that the disorder can recur in the following years. In such clinical cases, another session of Chemotherapy is needed in order to keep the disorder under control. This may form a pattern that will have to be repeated for several times.

Other therapy methods for patients with Follicular Lymphoma include treatment with stem cells, steroid therapy, monoclonal antibody treatment, therapy with Interferon, and so on.
