Hepatitis B Prophylaxis

Hepatitis B General Information

Hepatitis B is a common, but highly severe medical condition. This infectious medical disorder is known to affect the patient’s liver. After carefully studying the presence of this clinical illness, scientists have determined that its true cause is the presence of a specific virus – HBV (this is a common abbreviation for the hepatitis-B virus). The presence of this medical disorder is known to lead to the permanent scarring of the patient’s liver. The transmitting of the HBV is known to generally occur through direct contact with the body fluids (such as the blood) of an individual who is already infected with this medical condition. Other ways in which one can easily get this infectious medical condition is through the sharing of needles (this is especially common among IV drug users). If you have unprotected sex with an infected person or if you travel to countries where this medical disorder is widely spread, you may become infected with Hepatitis B. It is a known fact that mothers who are suffering from this medical condition can pass it to their newborns at birth. Individuals who have become infected with this medical condition during adulthood are known to generally fully recover from their condition (even if they suffer from a severe form of this medical disorder). Children however, may develop the chronic form of this disease.

Hepatitis B Prophylaxis

Luckily, various vaccines against this form of hepatitis are available on the market. Such medical products are the most important part of the average Hepatitis B Prophylaxis. Most of the vaccines that are available so far are given in 3 doses, each separated from each other by a couple of months (your physician will give you further details regarding this matter). However, some vaccines can be prescribed in accelerated doses that involve 4 administrations of the vaccine. A special type of vaccine may be prescribed to patients who are between 11 and 15 years of age, and it only requires the administration of two doses. After being administered such a vaccine, the patient is 90% protected against becoming infected with this medical condition. Their protection is known to generally last for various years (up to 23 years). However, even if the patient has received an immunization against the virus that causes this medical condition (the HBV), he or she should not disobey any of the advices that the average Hepatitis B Prophylaxis guidebook states (the ones that we will describe you in this chapter). The administration of such a vaccine is known to sometimes trigger a set of side effects. However, most individuals describe its adverse reactions as mild; the most common clinical manifestations that may be associated with most anti-hepatitis vaccines include: nausea, fatigue, weakness, headaches, and so on.

It is very important to educate yourself and others regarding the most important ways of precaution against developing this medical condition (regarding Hepatitis B Prophylaxis). You should avoid making sexual contacts (especially without a safe protection such as a condom) with individuals of which you do not know their HBV status. International travelers should discuss with their personal health care provider the possibility of receiving a vaccine against this medical condition. You should have this conversation with your physician way in advance of your travel, as the average vaccination is completed after 3 injections in a 6 months period. It is important to maintain a proper hygiene and a well balanced life. Individuals who have already suffered from a certain form of hepatitis should know that they cannot be re-infected with the same form of hepatitis. However, if a patient has suffered from Hepatitis A, he or she should take into consideration all the protective measures that are imposed by the Hepatitis B Prophylaxis.

Hepatitis B Treatment

If you suspect or if you know for sure that you have been recently exposed to the HBV virus, you should immediately alert your personal health care provider. If the patient receives a shot of the immune globulin of Hepatitis B during the first 24 hours after the contact with the virus, he or she may not develop this infectious medical condition. However, the individual will have to continue receiving three shots of a vaccine against this medical condition.

If an individual is suffering from the chronic form of this clinical illness, the situation is more problematic, as no special therapy options are available against the chronic form of Hepatitis B. The diagnosis of the disorder is challenging, as in some cases it does not trigger any symptoms of damage to the liver. Some physicians choose to closely monitor the individual’s health status rather than attempt to treat his or her medical condition. However, other specialists prescribe effective antiviral medicines in the treatment against this infectious disorder. The most common drugs that are prescribed in such cases are: Interferon, Tyzeka, Entecavir, Hepsera, and so on. In the most severe forms of hepatitis, liver transplant may be considered.
