Herpes Simplex Labialis

Herpes Simplex Labialis – General Information

Herpes Simplex Labialis, also known as cold sore, fever blister, is considered a viral disease caused by the type one virus, which can appear in the patient’s mouth or nose and usually appears in addition to fever. There are cases in which the Herpes Simplex Labialis condition develops in the absence of fever or prior disease. The virus is spread by oral secretions and develops especially in the facial region, involving the lips and nose. This type of skin condition is considered annoying because it tends to reoccur after a period of time. In almost all the cases, the sores can be painful and unsightly. If the patient does not treat the condition, it can progress to a severe form. In such cases, the disease becomes serious, and in some cases, fatal. This kind of herpes is categorized as a type 1 skin clinical condition. The labialis form of herpes is characterized by symptoms of fever, and the presence of typical blisters and sores which are tiny, clear, filled with clear fluid, that develop especially on the patient’s facial region. There are some cases in which the blisters can even affect the patient’s genital area, or can leave a wound on the patient’s skin. However, even Herpes Simplex Labialis presents two other forms, primary and recurrent. The sores caused by the primary infection usually heal completely, and do not leave any scars. The recurrent form of the condition is considered mild and can be triggered by fever, sun exposure and menstrual period.

Herpes Simplex Labialis – Symptoms

The warning signs of the Herpes Simplex Labialis are itching, burning, increased sensitivity, or tingling which appear in the area in which the herpes will develop. These signs are usually followed, depending on the skin of each patient and the severity of the infection, by the development of many raised and swollen areas on the skin. There are some typical signs and symptoms of the Herpes Simplex Labialis condition which can include skin lesions located around the patient’s lips, mouth and gums, small blisters or vesicles, filled with a clear yellowish fluid, which can appear on the raised, red colored, painful area, and, in some cases, mild fever. The blisters form, break and ooze, and after this, the yellow crusts slough to reveal the healthy skin. In some cases, several smaller blisters can merge to form a larger blister. After the blisters have been scabbed, the affected area will heal completely in one week to ten days. The medical condition can reappear with great ease and quite often, especially if the individual suffers from a condition that affects his or her immune system. There are cases in which the skin condition can cause symptoms such as headaches, fatigue or peculiar itching in the area nearby the nerves that lead to the affected area. The symptom of fatigue appears from the depression caused by the cosmetic compromising nature of the condition, a fact that can increase the severity and length of it. Herpes Simplex Labialis can be taken through direct skin contact with another infected patient.

Herpes Simplex Labialis – Treatment

Nowadays, there is no treatment procedure for Herpes Simplex Labialis that can destroy the viruses from the patient’s body that lead to its appearance. In almost all the cases, doctors recommend the use of analgesics to reduce the signs and symptoms such as pain or fever during the first outbreaks of the medical condition. There are also many other topical analgesics, which can be recommended as lidocaine or lihnociane ointment, applied to relieve the symptoms caused by the medical disorder, especially the itching and pain. There are some particular cases in which the health care provider can use a combination of hydrogen peroxide with certain substances to kill the virus. Some doctors can apply several prescription antiviral drugs which act by controlling the Herpes Simplex Labialis and can be prescribed as aciclovir, or Zovirax, valaciclovir, or Valtrex, famciclovir or Famvir, and penciclovir.  Doctors can use many other antiviral drugs to treat this kind of skin condition, but some of them can lead to the appearance of some uncomfortable side effects such as diarrhea. These drugs can be taken in as pills or as cream. The cream form of the medicine has proven to be more effective, causing fewer side effects. The oral therapy is contraindicated if the patient suffers from a non-immunocompromised medical condition. When administered orally, valaciclovir and famciclovir medicines have proven to more effective than aciclovir and penciclovir medicines. These drugs have the effect of interfering with the virus replication, slowing it, which allows the patient’s immune system to perform successfully.

In most cases, these medications depend on the activity of the viral thymidine kinase which acts by converting the drug into a monophosphate substance which can easily interfere with the viral replication of the DNA. Aciclovir is generally administered in suppressive therapies, especially if the patient is a pregnant woman. In these cases the treatment trial with valaciclovir and famciclovir is contraindicated, because they can worsen the patient’s symptoms caused by the Herpes Simplex Labialis. There are also some particular cases in which famciclovir can be used instead of aciclovir, especially in the first outbreaks of the Herpes Simplex Labialis, because it can reduce the appearance of the future outbreaks, reducing also the number of signs and symptoms. There are other available topical treatments that can be used to control Herpes Simplex Labialis and can be prescribed as Docosanol or Abreva, which is a cream that can be directly applied on the part of the patient’s affected skin. This kind of treatment option can help preventing the virus to fuse with the cell membrane. Tromantadine can also be used to treat this type of condition and can be applied in gel form. The gel inhibits the release of viral genetic material. Aloe Vera cream can also be used to treat the condition, because it helps the affected skin to heal faster. It also prevents the condition recurring. Cimetidine is usually taken for heartburn, but can also be used to treat the herpes, relieving the present signs and symptoms.
