NON-HODGKIN’S LYMPHOMA

Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma – General Informations

Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma is cancer that appears in your lymphatic system, the disease-fighting system spread throughout your body. In this kind of cancer, tumors develop from white blood cells, lymphocytes. These tumors can occur at different locations in your body. There are more than 30 types of Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Non-Hodgkin lymphoma may develop in any organ associated with the lymphatic system like spleen, lymph nodes, or tonsils. The most common place for the cancer to occur is in the lymph nodes in the neck, but it also can appear in other places, and can include the lymph glands under the arms (axilla), in the chest, or in the groin or abdomen. Most cases start with infiltration of lymph nodes, but some subtypes may be restricted to other lymphatic organs. There are many types of this disorder, which are usually categorized based on how the cells look on a microscopic view. The two types of these lymphomas are indolent lymphomas, which are slower growing and have fewer symptoms, and aggressive lymphomas, which grow more quickly. Because lymph tissue is found in many parts of the body, this kind of lymphoma can start almost anywhere. Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma is also considered to appear from genetic risk factors. For example, some genetic diseases cause children to be born with a deficient immune system. In addition to developing serious infections due to reduced immune defenses, they have an increased risk of developing the cancer, or lymphoma during childhood or as young adults.

Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma – Symptoms

The symptoms of Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma are different, depending on the location of the lymphoma and the involvement. Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma that are easily seen or easily palpated lymph nodes close to the surface of the body, which consists in lymph nodes on the sides of the neck, in the groin or underarm areas, and above the collar bone are usually noticed by the patient. When the lymph gland inside the abdomen is involved, the abdomen is swollen, and even is some cases, so much that it may resemble pregnancy in a woman. This symptom appears because there are large collections of fluid or cancerous tissue. Rarely, the cancer damages the lining layer of the abdominal cavity, which causes a large amount of cancerous fluid to build up. When lymphoma causes swelling of lymphoid tissue near the intestines, it can block the passage of feces. The pressure or blockage can also cause discomfort or even abdominal pain. If the lymphoma starts in the thymus, the irritation and compression of the trachea cause coughing, suffocation and shortness. Growth of lymphoma may compress the superior cava vein, which is the large vein that carries blood from the head and arms back to the heart. This causes swelling of the head and arms known as superior cava vein syndrome, which can also affect the brain and become life threatening. Symptoms can also include fever, night sweats, fatigue, weight loss, itchy skin, bone or join pain, and even recurring infections.

Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma – Treatment

The treatment applied to the patients suffering of Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma depends of a number of factors including whether the disease relapsed or is newly diagnose, or the disease is aggressive or indolent. It also depends on the stage of the disease, or what type or grade of the disease has the patient, it’s considered even the age and the medical status of the patient. Usually, the treatment consists in a combination of treatments, including chemotherapy, radiation, stem-cells transplantation, biologic therapy, radioimmunotherapy, and in some cases observation is considered. In the chemotherapy treatment, doctors use a combination of drugs, given orally or, depending on the patient, by injection. The drugs fight against fast-growing cancer cells. This treatment is used for intermediate- and high-grade lymphomas and advanced stages of the low-grade lymphomas. A single drug may be used if you have a low-grade type of the disease. Because lymphomas tend to be sensitive to chemotherapy, stem-cell transplantation is applied. The amount of chemotherapy that can be given is limited because of the damage chemotherapy does to your bone marrow. If lymphoma recurs, the chemotherapy must be taken in higher doses to treat the disease. To avoid this serious side effect, the affected bone marrow, healthy stem cells, those which are capable of producing new cells, are taken from your blood or bone marrow and frozen. After the patient takes very high doses of chemotherapy to kill the lymphoma, the healthy stem cells are thawed and injected back into your body. This treatment is used primarily to treat intermediate or high-grade lymphomas that relapse after initial, successful treatment.

Another way to treat Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, is by using radiation. High doses of radiation kill cancerous cells and shrink tumors, and it is used for early stages of the low-grade lymphomas. Is other cases, radiation is used in combination with chemotherapy, on intermediate-grade lymphomas to treat specific sites, such as the brain. The newest way to treat Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma is to use radioimmunotheraphy. This way of treatment uses two drugs: — ibritumomab (Zevalin) and tositumomab (Bexxar). Radioimmunotherapy uses monoclonal antibodies combined with radioactive isotopes. The antibodies attach themselves to the cancer cells, while the added radiation helps destroy the cancer cells. But, this kind of therapy can cause different serious side effects like reduced blood cell counts, hemorrhage and, in some cases, even life-threatening infections. The biologic therapy is using a drug called Rituximab or Rituxan. This drug is a type of monoclonal antibody that helps the immune system specifically target and destroy cancer cells. Rituximab is frequently used in combination with chemotherapy. It is also sometimes given in tandem with radioimmunotherapy. Also a new form is observation. If your lymphoma appears to be slow growing, a wait and see approach may be an option. Slowly growing lymphomas with few symptoms may not require treatment for a year or more. When you have symptoms of the disease, seek medical advice as soon as possible because the earlier Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma is diagnosed, the greater your chances for successful treatment.
