Peripheral Arteriography

Peripheral Arteriography

An angiogram is a medical examination in which the patient’s arteries are investigated through the use of x-rays; it is also widely referred to as an arteriogram. A Peripheral Arteriography is a special type of medical investigation in which the physician aims to take a look at the arteries of the limbs. Because the vessels are not normally seen on the average x-ray, the patient who is scheduled to undergo this type of medical examination will have to be administered a special contrast dye, which will make the vessels visible on the x-rays. Depending on the results of the patient’s Peripheral Arteriography, the physician will be able to determine the presence of any medical problems and to establish the appropriate course of action which should be applied in that specific medical case.

A patient can undergo this type of medical procedure if his or her PD wants to rule out the possibility of the presence of pulmonary embolisms, clots in certain veins, aneurysms located in the major vessels (including the aorta) or brain aneurysms, the presence of atherosclerosis in one of the main vessels of the neck (the carotid artery), and so on. In other words, undergoing Peripheral Arteriography is very effective in the diagnosis of certain types of peripheral vascular medical disorders. Such conditions are triggered by an abnormal narrowing / blockage of the patient’s vessels, which restricts the normal flow of the blood through the patient’s organism. The presence of this type of medical condition is commonly associated with intermittent claudication (fatigue, pain, muscle cramps, etc), a condition that can even limit the patient’s normal ability of performing daily activities or recreational routines. Vascular tumors, arteriovenous malformation, arteriovenous fistula, and other similar vascular conditions can be diagnosed through this type of clinical examination procedure.

Peripheral Arteriography Description

The entire medical procedure is known to last for about 60 minutes. During Peripheral Arteriography, you will be awake, but sedated (you will not experience any discomfort). You should feel free to ask the lab staff or the cardiologist any questions that you may have concerning any step of the procedure. The skin area in which the catheter will be inserted will be scrubbed, covered with sterile sheets and then locally anesthetized. It is possible for you to feel pressure during this type of medical procedure; on the other hand, very few patients report to have experienced pain during Peripheral Arteriography. The cardiac medical professional will insert a catheter into one of your peripheral vessels. He or she will insert a special contrast solution through the catheter. The injection of the contrast dye should not last longer than half of minute. During the injection, certain patients experience hot sensation, warmth, but no pain (if, by any chance, you do experience pain during this procedure, please notify the cardiologist and the lab staff at once).

All patients must know that it is imperative for them to remain calm and still during the entire investigation. After you have been injected the special contrast dye, you will have to undergo x-rays of the needed limb(s). Several x-rays may be needed for each limb. The images of the x-rays can be viewed on special monitors. Your cardiologist will place an appropriate diagnosis depending on the results of the Peripheral Arteriography. After the procedure is finished, you will have to remain in place for several hours; it is important to remain in the hospital in order to have access to professional medical attention in case you need it (health care specialists will constantly monitor your heart rate, blood pressure, and other similar medical parameters). You should know that you may feel lightheaded or dizzy when you get out of bed – you may need to be assisted in order not to fall.

Peripheral Arteriography Related Medication

Iopamidol is a medicine that can be employed with confidence in the case of patients who undergo Peripheral Arteriography. Of all patients who are treated with this product before undergoing this type of medical procedure, very few report / present evidence of pain; most of them state that they have experienced only a minor / slight discomfort, and a feeling of warmth during the injection of the contrast agent. This medication can also be purchased under the following trade-names: Iopamiron, Isovue, Iopamiro, and so on. This drug is considered one of the most common low-osmolar iodinated contrast dyes. Like most other medical products, it can be purchased in multiple concentrations, which vary between 200 and 360 mgI / mL. A patient can be administered Iopamidol as part of the Peripheral Arteriography procedure or as part of other medical investigations: thoraco-lumbar myelography, tomographic cisternography, etc.

This medication is a category B FDA pregnancy drug. Although fetal harm was not detected during animal studies, most contrast dyes that are based on iodine are avoided by pregnant females as much as possible. A pregnant and / or a nursing mother should not be administered this medication unless it is considered vital for the accurate diagnosis of the patient’s condition. We have no information concerning the levels in which the active substances of Iopamidol are excreted in breast milk.

As with other iodinated contrast dyes, this medical product must not be administered to a patient who is allergic to its components. You can find a detailed list of the ingredients of this medication in the product’s medical label (the one that accompanies a pack of Iopamidol). You can ask your local pharmacist to provide you with such a label. If you experience the unpleasant symptoms of an allergic reaction after you are administered this medication (hives, swelling, rash, itching, etc), you should immediately notify the nearest medical provider; you will receive the proper medical care for such a condition (an allergic reaction) at the nearest medical center / emergency location. It is important to seek further professional medical information about the medicines that you could be administered as part of the Peripheral Arteriography procedure from your personal physician; together, you will be able to determine which of these medical products suits your condition best.
