ALDACTAZIDE (Hydrochlorothiazide and Spironolactone)

Aldactazide Information

Aldactazide, also widely known as Hydrochlorothiazide and Spironolactone, is actually a thiazide diuretic (commonly referred to as water pill). It increases the amount of water and salt that you use through your urine, decreasing the amount of salt and water (fluid) from your body.

Aldactazide Warnings/Precautions

You should see a doctor before starting to take Aldactazide if you have any of these disorders:

• Liver disease
• Diabetes
• Kidney stones
• High levels of cholesterol or triglyceride in your blood
• Gout

You may have to be monitored during treatment or to take a lower dose of Aldactazide. In some cases, you might not be allowed to take this drug at all.
Aldactazide should not be given to patients who are suffering from:

• Allergic reactions to sulfa-based medicines such as sulfa antibiotics

Aldactazide Side Effects

Stop your treatment with Aldactazide if you experience any of these severe side effects:

• Allergic reactions (like difficulty in breathing, throat closing, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or hives
• Breath shortness, irregular heartbeat, weakness, fatigue, confusion, numbness, or tingling ( this is caused by abnormally high levels of K in your blood)
• muscle cramping
• severe mood changes
• confusion
• no or little urine
• black, tarry or bloody stools
• easy bleeding or bruising  
• blood in the urine
• yellowing of the eyes or skin

Other more common side effects are:

• numbness or tingling in the feet or hands 
• dizziness
• tiredness
• headache
• excessive urination
• muscle cramps or weakness 
• increased thirst or hunger 
• dry mouth
• nausea, diarrhea, vomiting or constipation
• weight changes
• decreased sex drive
• increased swelling
• skin sensitivity to sunlight

These effects should not stop you from taking Aldactazide. You should inform your doctor of this.   

Aldactazide Drug Interactions

These drugs can interact with Aldactazide:

• ACE inhibitors like ramipril (Altace) captopril (Capoten) or benazepril (Lotensin), fosinopril (Monopril),  enalapril (Vasotec), moexipril (Univasc), lisinopril (Prinivil, Zestril), quinapril (Accupril).
• NSAIDs like ibuprofen (Motrin, Rufen,  Advil, others), ketoprofen (Orudis KT, Orudis, Oruvail), naproxen (Naprosyn, Anaprox, Aleve), diclofenac (Cataflam, Voltaren), fenoprofen (Nalfon), etodolac (Lodine), indomethacin (Indocin),  flurbiprofen (Ansaid), ketorolac (Toradol), nabumetone (Relafen), sulindac (Clinoril), oxaprozin (Daypro), piroxicam (Feldene), and tolmetin (Tolectin)
• Diabetes drugs like glipizide (Glucotrol), tolbutamide (Orinase), chlorpropamide (Diabinese), tolazamide (Tolinase), and Glyburide (Diabeta, Micronase, Glynase)
• Lithium (Lithobid, Eskalith, Lithane, others) combined with Aldactazide may cause severe side effects
• Steroid drugs like hydrocortisone (Solu-Cortef, Cortef, Hydrocortone), prednisone (Orasone, Meticorten, Deltasone), methylprednisolone (MetaPred, Solu-Medrol, Medrol, Depo-Medrol, A- others), dexamethasone (Hexadrol, Decadron), prednisolone (Delta Cortef, Pediapred, Prelone, others), corticotropin (ACTH, Acthar), betamethasone (Celestone), and some others affect K levels in the blood
• Warfarin (Coumadin) usually has decreased effects if it is combined with Aldactazide
• Probenecid (Benemid), allopurinol (Zyloprim), and even sulfinpyrazone (Anturane) have reduced effects if they are combined with Aldactazide 
• olestipol (Colestid) and cholestyramine (Questran) sometimes decrease the benefic effects of Aldactazide . This drug should be taken 1 hour before or at least 4 hours after a single dose of colestipol or cholestyramine
• Laxatives normally affect potassium levels in the patient’s body. Therefore, taking laxatives can interfere with you therapy with Aldactazide 

There are other drugs that interact with Aldactazide. Therefore, you should seriously discuss with your doctor before you start taking any other drug during a treatment with Aldactazide, even if they are simple cold or cough medicines.
