Alphagan (Brimonidine Ophthalmic)

Alphagan Information

Alphagan, with the generic name of Brimonidine Ophthalmic, is specially formulated to reduce the amount of fluid in the eyes. It works by minimizing the production of fluid inside the eye and by increasing the amount of fluid that drains from the eye.

Alphagan Indications

Bextra is mostly prescribed to patients suffering from:

• Open-angle glaucoma
• Ocular hypertension (eye high pressure)

Alphagan Warnings/Precautions

Inform your doctor if you have any of the following conditions before taking Alphagan:

• Kidney or liver disease
• Any type of heart condition including high blood pressure
• Taking medicines to treat heart ailments
• Raynaud’s disease (poor circulation)
• Have poor blood flow in any of the arteries in the heart or neck
• Experiencing dizziness
• Depression

You may be given dosage adjustments or may be required to undergo special monitoring during the treatment period.

This drug belongs to FDA Pregnancy Category C. It is not known to harm an unborn fetus. However, it is advised to have a talk with your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to be prior to taking this medicament.

Nursing moms are also suggested to see their doctor before taking Alphagan as it is not made certain if Alphagan passes into breast milk.

Alphagan Intake Instructions

Alphagan must be used as directed by your physician. Normally, it is used 3 times a day. If there is any instruction that appears unclear to you, ask a bonafide medical person to explain it to you.

Follow guidelines below for the proper preparation and application of Alphagan:

• Always wash hands prior to using the eye drops.
• Remove contact lens (if you are wearing one). Ask your doctor if you can replace the lens after the application. Alphagan contains benzalkonium chloride that may discolor your lens.
• Tilt head back slightly and pull down on the lower eyelid.
• Position dropper above the eye. Look up and away from the dropper.
• Squeeze out a drop and close the eye.
• Apply gentle pressure to the inside corner of the eye (near the nose) for about 1 minute to prevent the liquid from draining down the tear duct.
• For medications requiring more than one drop, apply drops with a 5-minute interval.
• Repeat process on the other eye is needed.

Avoid the dropper from having contact with any surface including your eyes and hands. As it is sterile, it may cause eye infection. Always keep it capped when not in use. Never use the eye drop if you observe particles or discoloration.

Alphagan Missed Dose

Unless told by your physician, Alphagan must not be double dosed. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember as long as it is not almost time for the next scheduled dose. Otherwise, skip missed dose and proceed with the next.

Alphagan Overdose

Over dosage of Alphagan is not alarming at all. However, if you have accidentally ingested it orally or suspect an overdose, phone an emergency room or poison control for the proper medical attention.

Alphagan Side Effects

Stop usage of Alphagan and seek medical help if you experience any of the following adverse conditions:

• Difficulty in breathing
• Closing of the throat
• Swelling of the lips, tongue, face, or hives
• Or other allergic reactions

Other minor side effects that are likely to occur include:

• Burning, stinging, or itching of the eye
• Blurred vision
• Redness or watering of the eye
• Sensitivity of the eye to light
• Swollen or puffy eye
• Discharge from the eye
• Headache, fatigue, or dizziness
• Dry nose or mouth
• Change in taste

In any of the cases mentioned above, continue use of Alphagan and inform your doctor.

For other side effects not listed that are particularly bothersome, tell your doctor immediately.

Alphagan Drug Interactions

Refrain from using other eye medication while under treatment with Alphagan. Though unlikely, interactions may be experienced if you are taking sedatives, sleeping pills, antihistamines, alcohol, pain relievers. Drowsiness or dizziness may be felt. They may also further slow down your heart rate or lower your blood pressure.

Alphagan is strictly not recommended for use by patients who have taken monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors such as isocarboxazid (Marplan), phenelzine (Nardil), or tranylcypromine (Parnate) in the last two (2) weeks.

Always have a talk with your doctor prior to taking other prescribed or over-the-counter medicines, including herbal products, during the treatment period.
