Bezalip (Bezafibrate)

Bezalip Information

Bezalip is a medicine containing the active ingredient bezafibrate. Bezafibrate is a type of medicine known as a fibrate. Bezalip works by reducing the production of fats or lipids, which include cholesterol and triglycerides, by the liver.

Bezalip Indications

Bezalip is used as an adjunct to diet and other therapeutic measures for:

• Treatment of patients with hypercholesterolemia and hyperlipidemia
• Regulate lipid and apoprotein levels
• Treatment of adult patients with very high triglyceride levels
• Fredrickson classification Type IV and V hyperlipidemia

Bezalip is significant in the prevention of heart diseases.

Bezalip Warnings

Bezalip must be used with caution in patients who have:

• Decreased kidney function
• Diabetes
• Hormone disturbances
• Hypothyroidism
• electrolyte imbalance
• Individuals who consume large quantities of alcohol
• Severe infections or trauma

Bezalip must not be used in a syndrome caused by kidney inflammation characterized by:

• Large amount of protein in the urine
• Swelling
• weight gain
• high blood pressure or nephrotic syndrome
• Allergy to other medicines of this type
• Breastfeeding
• Gall bladder disease
• Pregnancy
• Severe liver disease
• Severely decreased kidney function

Bezalip should not be used if you are allergic to one or any of its ingredients or unless otherwise directed by your doctor. Inform your doctor or pharmacist if you have previously experienced such an allergy.

Stop using Bezalip and inform your doctor or pharmacist immediately if you feel you have experienced an allergic reaction.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Bezalip should not be used during breastfeeding because there is no information available about the safety of this medicine. Seek immediate medical advice from your doctor.

Bezalip Intake Guidelines

Bezalip must be taken with or after food. Bezalip must not be chewed but swallowed whole.

Bezalip Dosage

The standard dosage is one 200-mg immediate-release tablet 3 times daily. In cases of good therapeutic response, especially in hypertriglyceridemia, the dosage can be reduced to one 200 mg tablet twice daily.

The 200-mg immediate-release tablet is administered and should be swallowed without chewing with sufficient fluid, with or after meals.

The recommended dosage is one 400-mg sustained-release tablet once daily.

The 400-mg sustained-release tablet is administered and should be taken in the morning or evening with or after meals. The sustained-release tablet should be swallowed without chewing with sufficient fluid.

Bezalip Overdose

Symptomatic and supportive measures should be taken although there has been no reported case of overdosage. Hemodialysis should not be considered because Bezalip is highly bound to plasma proteins.
Overdose may occur and severe rhabdomyolysis may develop if patients with existing impaired renal function do not follow dosage recommendations. Administration of Bezalip must be stopped immediately and renal function must be carefully monitored.

Bezalip Missed Dose

Take the missed dose as soon as possible. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the dose missed and take only the next regularly scheduled dose as instructed.

Bezalip Side Effects

Individual people may be affected by medicines in different ways or may have different side effects. The following are some of the side effects that are known:

• Headache
• Impotence
• Nausea
• Blood disorders
• Photosensitivity
• Alopecia
• Alteration in results of liver function tests
• Decreased appetite
• Myopathy
• Dizziness
• Gallstones
• Rhabdomyolysis
• Myalgia
• Myasthenia
• Allergic skin reactions
• Feeling of fullness

Bezalip may very rarely have side effects on the muscles. Because of this, you should inform your doctor urgently if you experience any muscular symptoms such as:

• Pain
• Tenderness
• Cramps
• Weakness

Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if such symptoms occur while taking Bezalip, particularly if it is accompanied by a fever or feeling generally unwell. Your doctor may need to check for side effects on the muscles by taking a blood test to measure the level of a compound called creatinine kinase in your blood. The test should not be done following vigorous exercise if this is the case.

Bezalip Drug Reactions

Effectiveness of Bezalip may be affected by the following:

• Resins such as cholestyramine
• Estrogens
• Statins such as simvastatin
• Ciclosporin
• Colestipol
• Cholestyramine

Bezalip increases the anti-blood-clotting effect of anticoagulant medicines such as warfarin that increases the risk of bleeding in people taking these medicines.
Bezalip may increase the blood sugar lowering effect of antidiabetic medicines including insulin.
