Cellcept Information

Cellcept is an immunosuppressant. Cellcept is with a generic name of mycophenolate mofetil. As an immunosuppressant, it decreases the action of the immune system of your body.

Cellcept Indications

Cellcept as a drug is used mostly for weaken the immune system especially in cases of organ transplants to prevent the body’s rejection of the organ. Cellcept is usually administered together with cyclosporine and a steroid in these procedures.

Cellcept can also be used for other purposes aside from this.

Cellcept Warnings

Tell your doctor if you area phenylketonuric as Cellcept contains aspartame which is a source of phenylalanine.

Cellcept and Pregnancy

It is not known whether Cellcept can cause harm to the unborn when taken by pregnant women. Cellcept belongs to drugs in the Pregnancy category C. These drugs have not yet been established to be harmful to the human fetus. However, animal studies have shown that the active ingredients of Cellcept, when introduced to animals caused birth defects and doctors basing from these animals studies, concluded that Cellcept is not advisable for pregnant women and for those planning on becoming pregnant.

It is not also known whether Cellcept and its contents pass into the breast milk of nursing mothers. Do not take Cellcept without first talking to your doctor.

Also tell your doctor if you have any of the following medical conditions before taking Cellcept:

  • Stomach ulcers
  • Problems in the digestive system
  • Viral, bacterial or fungal infections – because by taking Cellcept, your immune system is weakened and any type of infection may be hard to cure and contain.
  • A hereditary occurrence of HGPRT or hypoxanthine-guanine phosphoribosyl-transferase

If you have any of these medical problems, inform your doctor immediately. Your doctor may advise you not to take Cellcept or lower your dosage.

Cellcept can increase a person’s risk of contacting infection. Always be on the lookout for signs and symptoms of infection such as sore throat, fever and chills, unusual bleeding, pale stools and darkening of the urine.

Cellcept can increase a patient’s susceptibility to skin cancer. If you are taking Cellcept, limit your exposure to sunlight and its UV rays. Always use protective clothing and sunscreen to protect yourself.

Risks of cancer are increased when you are on Cellcept medication.

Cellcept Intake Guidelines

Take Cellcept as directed by your doctor. Never attempt to deviate from your doctor’s instructions.

Each dose of Cellcept must be taken with a full glass of water.

Each dose of Cellcept must be taken on an empty stomach, preferably 1 or 2 hours before meals unless otherwise directed by your doctor.

The usual frequency of taking Cellcept is twice a day.

If you are prescribed the Cellcept tablet or capsule, never break it, open it or crush it or chew the capsules/tablet. If the Cellcept suspension is prescribed, never make it in contact with your skin, eyes and other mucous membranes. If this occurs, flush the contaminated area with plenty of water. If the medicine comes in contact with the skin, wash the area with soap and water immediately.

Cellcept Dosage

The dosage for Cellcept can only be effectively determined by your doctor. Always adhere to your doctor’s instructions regarding the dosage.

Cellcept Overdose

Symptoms of Cellcept overdose include:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Unusual bleeding or bruising
  • Stomach upset and diarrhea

If these symptoms are present and overdose is suspected, immediately ask for medical assistance and emergency medical attention.

Cellcept Missed Dose

If you happen to miss a dose of Cellcept, you can take it as soon as you remember provided that it is not yet near the time for the next dose. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, just entirely skip that dose you missed and proceed with the next scheduled dose.

Cellcept Side Effects

The following are the side effects associated with taking Cellcept:

  • Allergic reactions – depending on the susceptibility of the patient and his/her allergies
  • Body malaise and unusual weakness and tiredness
  • Cough, sore throat, hoarseness
  • Tremors
  • Dizziness
  • Insomnia
  • Headache
  • Rashes
  • Edema
  • Stomach upsets
  • Diarrhea
  • General discomfort

If you experience any of these symptoms and if any of them becomes intolerable or bothersome, inform your doctor immediately so that your doctor may advise you on what to do with the discomfort.

Cellcept Drug Reactions

The following drugs may not interact with Cellcept. It is advised that you inform your doctor if you are taking any of these drugs:

  • Other immunosuppressants
  • Cholestyramine
  • Probenecid
  • Theophylline
  • Phenytoin
  • Live vaccines
  • Acyclovir
  • Antacid (whether they are prescribed or over the counter)

You not be advised to take Cellcept or your doctor may lower your Cellcept dosage if you have been taking any of this drugs recently.

Also inform your doctor of the drugs you are taking even if they are not included in the list above as other drugs may also interact with Cellcept.
