Comtan Information

Comtan’s primary component is entacapone. When used with levodopa and carbidopa, this drug increases the amount of levodopa in our body. This drug is always used with levodopa and carbidopa for it has no effect when used alone.

Comtan Indications

Comtan is used with levodopa and carbidopa in treating patients suffering from Parkinson’s disease who are experiencing symptoms of wearing off. It may also be used for purposes not indicated here.

Comtan Warnings

Comtan is not advisable if you have any of the following conditions:

• Liver disease
• Muscle damage or elevated body temperature and confusion because of a medication

Your doctor may not allow you to take Comtan, may need to adjust your dosage or may need to monitor your intake of the drug if you have any of the preceding conditions.

Comtan belongs to the FDA pregnancy category C, which means that it is unknown whether it may or may not harm an unborn baby. Do not take this medication without consent from your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to be pregnant. It is also unknown whether Comtan passes into breast milk or not. Do not take this drug without talking to your doctor if you are nursing an infant.

Comtan may cause dizziness or drowsiness. Employ caution when driving, operating machinery or performing hazardous activities. Alcohol increases its drowsing effect. Do not take in alcohol while taking Comtan.

Comtan Intake Guidelines

Comtan should be taken in exactly as instructed by your doctor. If there are matters that you do not understand, refer to your doctor, nurse or a pharmacist and ask them to explain those matters to you.

Comtan should be taken in with a full glass of water and should be taken in along with levodopa and carbidopa. It may be taken in with or without food or meals.

Do not abruptly stop taking this medication especially without consent from your doctor for you may need gradual dosage reduction in order to prevent withdrawal effects.

Comtan Dosage

Dosage of Comtan should be obtained from your doctor. Dosage may vary from person to person with regards to a variety of factors.

Comtan Overdose

Overdose of this drug has no known symptoms. Seek immediate medical attention when you suspect overdose.

Comtan Missed Dose

If possible, do not miss a dose of this drug. If a dose is missed, however, take the missed one as soon as remembered. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed one and take the subsequent dose according to your normal dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose of this drug unless otherwise directed by your doctor.

Comtan Side Effects

Comtan may have serious side effects and allergic reactions. They include the following:

• Closing of the throat
• Difficulty in breathing
• Swelling of the lips, tongue or face
• Hives
• Fever and confusion
• Muscle pain
• Hallucinations

If you experience any of the preceding symptoms, discontinue use of the drug and inform your doctor immediately.

Comtan also has less serious side effects, which are more likely to occur. They include:

• Abnormal movement of the muscles
• Nausea and vomiting
• Discolored urine
• Diarrhea
• Abdominal pain
• Dry mouth
• Dizziness
• Anxiety
• Drowsiness
• Increased sweating
• Shortness of breath

If you experience any of these, continue using Comtan but inform your doctor immediately.

Other side effects may also occur when you take Comtan. Inform your doctor if you experience anything unusual while or after taking this drug.

Comtan Drug Reactions

Monoamine oxidase inhibitors such as isocarbozid, phenelzine, tranylcypromine should not be taken in with Comtan.

Comtan also interacts with the following:

• Isoproterenol
• Epinephrine
• Norepinephrine
• Dopamine
• Dobutamine
• Methyldopa
• Isoetherine
• Bitolterol
• Probenecid
• Cholestyramine
• Erythromycin
• Rifampin
• Ampicillin

You may not be able to take Comtan, may need dosage adjustments, or may need special monitoring if you are taking these drugs.

Comtan also increases the drowsing effects of antidepressants, alcohol, antihistamines, sedative, pain relievers, anxiety medicines and muscle relaxants. Do not take the preceding medications along with Comtan without your doctor’s approval.

Other drugs may also interact with Comtan. Inform your doctor if you are taking drugs other than Comtan including over the counter prescriptions such as vitamins, minerals and herbal products.
