COSOPT (DORZOLAMIDE AND TIMOLOL OPHTHALMIC)

Cosopt Information

Cosopt is a medicine also generically known under the name of Dorzolamide and Timolol Ophthalmic. This drug’s main purpose is to reduce the amount of fluid from inside the patient’s eye, thus reducing his or her eye pressure.

Cosopt Indications

Cosopt is usually indicated for the treating of disorders such as high eye pressure or glaucoma. 
Cosopt (Dorzolamide and Timolol Ophthalmic) can also be used for some other purposes that have not been listed here. 

Cosopt Warnings

Ask for your doctor’s permission to take Cosopt. You should inform you doctor if you are suffering from:

• Kidney disease
• Allergy to this drug (Cosopt)
• Liver disease
• Chronic lung disease
• Overactive thyroid
• Asthma
• High blood pressure
• Slow heart rate
• Heart block
• Heart failure
• Diabetes mellitus

If you have any of these disorders you should be given a lower dose of Dorzolamide and Timolol Ophthalmic or you might not be allowed to start a treatment with this drug. 
The effects of this drug on a growing fetus are not known. However, you should not take Cosopt if you are pregnant or if you are planning to be pregnant soon without your doctor’s consent.
Cosopt can and does pass into breast milk. Therefore, it could harm a nursing child. You should refrain from taking this drug if you are breastfeeding a child. 

Cosopt Intake Guidelines

Wash you hands before using these eye drops.
You should not allow the dropper to touch any surface (this includes hands and eyes) because the dropper is and should remain sterile (if it gets contaminated, it could cause eye infections).
If you start suffering from an eye infection or if you suspect that the dropper is no longer sterile, you should alert your doctor.
Before you use this drug for the first time, you should check if the Safety Strip on the bottle’s front has not been broken. Even if the bottle has not been opened, there should be a gap between the cap and the bottle. In order to break the bottle’s seal, you may tear the Safety Strip off.  
If you are currently using another type of eye drops (other drugs) you should wait for at least 10 minutes before you apply Dorzolamide and Timolol Ophthalmic. 
After you have taken all the doses that your doctor has prescribed you, you may find some extra medicine in the bottle. This is normal, but you should not remove this extra amount of Cosopt from the drug’s bottle.

Cosopt Dosage

A patient should normally take two doses of Cosopt daily. You should follow the instructions that your physician has given you.
You must follow all your personal doctor’s instructions. If you do not understand some of them or if you have other questions regarding your treatment with this drug, you should ask a nurse, a doctor or a pharmacist.

Cosopt Overdose

If you suspect to suffer from overdose with this drug you are in need of medical care.
Although the symptoms of Cosopt overdose have not been established, they could include:

• Slower heart rate
• Heart attack
• Dizziness
• Wheezing
• Breath shortness
• Headache
• Difficulty breathing
• Chest pain

Cosopt Missed Dose

If you miss a dose, you should take it as soon as you remember, then you should ask your doctor for further instructions. It is strictly forbidden for a patient to take double doses of this drug without a physician’s approval. 

Cosopt Side Effects

You should stop your treatment with Cosopt if you are experiencing some of these severe side effects:

• Congestive heart failure
• Throat closing 
• Swelling of the lips
• Anxiety
• Asthma attack
• Swelling of the face
• Breathing difficulty 
• Wheezing
• Swelling of the tongue
• Hives
• Breath Shortness
• Chest pain

You could experience other less dangerous side effects. You may continue using this drug (Cosopt) but you should inform your doctor at once if you experience any of these side effects:

• Burning
• Blurred vision
• Low blood pressure
• Itching
• Headache
• Stinging
• Change in taste
• Rashes
• Depression
• Eye inflammation
• Irregular heartbeat
• Watering of the eye
• Increased eye sensitivity to direct sunlight
• Fainting
• Fatigue
• Nausea
• Slower heartbeat

You should ask for immediate medical care and you should alert you physician as soon as possible if you experience some of these side effects:

• Eye redness 
• Eye infection
• Discharge
• Itching
• Lid swelling
• Drainage
• Lid crusting

Some other side effects that have not been listed in this guide could also occur. Alert you personal physician if you experience anything unusual or bothersome.

Before starting a treatment with Cosopt, you should tell you doctor if you have recently taken or are taking these drugs:

• Acetazolamide
• Methazolamide
• Dichlorphenamide
• Propanolol
• Metoprolol
• Atenolol
• Carvedilol
• Acebutolol
• Carteolol
• Pindolol
• Labetalol
• Timolol
