DDAVP (DESMOPRESSIN) (MINITRIN)

DDAVP Information

DDAVP has a generic name of desmopressin oral and injectable. DDAVP is a man made counterpart of the natural hormone called arginine vasopressin which is responsible for proper blood regulation, proper blood pressure, proper movement of the intestines and stomach, proper uterine function and proper kidney function. In short DDAVP is responsible for ensuring that all the proper body functions are carried out well.

DDAVP Indications

DDAVP is indicated for the treatment of hemophilia A.

DDAVP is also recommended for the treatment of the Type I of von Willebrand’s disease.

DDAVP can also be prescribed for the treatment of cranial diabetes insipidus.

DDAVP can also be prescribed to treat other medical conditions aside from the ones mentioned here.

DDAVP Warnings

DDAVP is not likely to be harmful to pregnant women and their unborn. DDAVP is a drug belonging to drugs in Pregnancy Category B and tests have shown that they are not expected to be harmful to pregnant women and to their unborn fetus. However, for nursing mothers, it is not yet known whether DDAVP passes into the breast milk. It is advised that if you are nursing an infant, you have to consult your doctor first before taking DDAVP.

The safety of DDAVP to children 12 years old and below for the treatment of cranial diabetes insipidus is not yet established.

Children or babies under 3 months of age are strongly not advised to take DDAVP for treating von Willebrand’s disease or hemophilia A.

Water intoxication is likely to occur when taking DDAVP especially if water intake and fluid intake is not controlled. This occurs especially in children, to reduce the onset of water intoxication, limit the amount of water taken and only allow water intake to satisfy extreme thirst. Elderly patients are also susceptible to water intoxication, to prevent this, always limit water intake when on DDAVP medication.

DDAVP may also be not advised for patients with any of the following medical conditions:

• von Willebrand’s disease (Type II)
• heart related problems
• hypertension
• cystic fibrosis

If you have any of the mentioned problems, you may not be able to take DDAVP or you maybe advised to considerably alter your dosage or you may be advised to undergo special monitoring and adjustments.

DDAVP Intake and Administration Guidelines

Take DDAVP exactly as your doctor prescribed the intake. Never deviate from your doctor’s instructions on how to take DDAVP.

Each dose of DDAVP must be taken with a full glass of water.

For DDAVP injectables:

Administration of DDAVP is only to the subcutaneous area or to the vein. Injections can only be made under the skin and intravenously. DDAVP is not advised to be injected in the joint or muscle.

Always follow your doctor’s instructions on how to administer DDAVP, especially if you are the one administering the injection to yourself.

Do not use needles and syringes that have been previously used. Never reuse these paraphernalia.

DDAVP injectables should always be stored inside the refrigerator.

DDAVP Dosage

The exact and accurate dosage for DDAVP can be effectively determined by your doctor. Never attempt to prescribe a dosage for yourself.

DDAVP Overdose

Symptoms of DDAVP overdose include:

• nausea and vomiting
• headache
• seizures
• stomach cramps and upsets
• flushing and redness

If these symptoms are present and overdose is suspected, immediately seek emergency medical attention.

DDAVP Missed Dose

If you happen to miss a dose of DDAVP, you can it as soon as you remember— Provided that it is not yet near the time for the next DDAVP scheduled dose. It is almost time for the next scheduled dose, entirely skip that dose you missed and take the next one. It is not advised to take double doses of DDAVP.

DDAVP Side Effects

The side effects associated with taking DDAVP may be serious or non-serious in nature. Among the serious side effects are:

• Allergic reactions characterized by hives, swelling of face, nose, mouth and throat and difficulty in breathing.
• Seizures
• Nausea and vomiting
• Stomach upsets and abdominal cramps
• Shortness of breath
• Pain in the vaginal area
• Heartburn

Other less serious side effects associated with DDAVP intake are:

• Chills
• Increase in heart rate
• Red and watery eyes
• Flushing
• Water retention
• Swelling at the injection site
• Dizziness
• Weakness

Other side effects not mentioned here may also be likely to occur. Inform your doctor if you experience anything that may be out of the ordinary.

DDAVP Drug Reactions

There aren’t any drugs that known to adversely interact with DDAVP but it is still best that you inform your doctor of the drugs you are taking as dangerous interactions may still possibly occur.
