Generically known as doxorubicin, Adriamycin is clustered to the group of medicines belonging to the cancer medication group. The main ingredient of Adriamycin which is doxorubicin interferes with the growth of cancer cells and its spread in the body.

Adriamycin Indications

Adriamycin is indicated for the treatment of cancer and to stunt the growth of cancer cells in the body as well as for the prevention of the growth of cancer cells.

Adriamycin may be prescribed for treatment of various kinds of cancer.

Adriamycin Warnings

Adriamycin should be used with caution if you have the following medical conditions:

• Kidney trouble
• Liver malfunctions
• Heart problems
• poor bone marrow performance
• have been a recipient of radiation therapy that included the heart
• have been previously treated with other doxorubicin medicines such as Rubex, Doxil, Cerubidine, Daunoxome, Idamycin and Mitoxantrone

It is not advisable to recklessly take Adriamycin when you have the above mentioned condition as the effect may prove fatal.

Adriamycin and Pregnancy

Adriamycin belongs to the medicines in Pregnancy Category D which means that it has been studied that the components of Adriamycin may cause harm to the unborn, may it be birth defects or other serious conditions that may adversely affect pregnancy. Never use Adriamycin when you are pregnant and avoid getting pregnant when you are taking Adriamycin.

Doxorubicin, the active component of Adriamycin has a tendency to be passed into breast milk and may cause hazardous side effects to the nursing infant. Therefore, consideration against breast feeding must be done.

Adriamycin in Children

Adriamycin may cause potential hazards to children. Increase risks of heart problems have been reported and the growth and development of gonads may also be affected.

Adriamycin may decrease the number of blood cells in the bone marrow. Avoid prolonged use of Adriamycin.

Avoid contact of Adriamycin into skin. If this happens, immediately rinse it with soap and water.

For Nurses/Caregivers attending to patients exposed to Adriamycin treatment, it is important that contact with patients’ bodily fluids be avoided for at least 5 days after each treatment.

For patients under Adriamycin medication, stay away from people with viral infections from colds, flu and to other contagious diseases. Also avoid vaccines with live strains of a virus or people who have recently been vaccinated with live virus strains as the virus may be passed on to you. When taking Adriamycin, your immune system is significantly lowered therefore avoid viruses and people infected with them as you are most susceptible to these diseases.

Adriamycin Intake Guidelines

Administration of this medicine must be directly supervised by a healthcare professional who is experienced in the use of chemotherapeutic agents.

Regular blood tests should be taken at the start and at the end of each treatment to evaluate the progress and side effects.

Adriamycin Dosage

The effective dosage of Adriamycin is determined by the doctor depending on the type of cancer to be treated and the severity of the cancer.

Adriamycin Overdose

If overdose is suspected, immediately consult your doctor and seek emergency medical attention. The symptoms of Adriamycin overdose are similar to that of the side effects but on a more severe level.

Adriamycin Missed Dose

When you happen to miss a dose, do not do double doses. Consult your physician for advice on what to do when you miss a dose.

Adriamycin Side Effects

The side effects of using Adriamycin may vary depending on the exposure and susceptibility of the patient.

Immediately seek medical attention if you experience the following:

• allergic reaction characterized by hives, difficulty in breathing, closing of throat and air passages, swelling of lips, tongue and face
• decrease in bone marrow functions characterized by easy bruising, extreme fatigue, bleeding, bloody and black tarry stools, fever, chills and other signs of infection
• congestive heart failure characterized by fluid retention, chest pains and difficulty in breathing
• irregular heartbeats
• liver damage characterized by yellowing of the skin and eyes
• severe nausea, vomiting and loss of appetite
• immobilization of certain body parts, numbness
• seizures
• increase in the levels of uric acid in the body characterized by pains on the joint and stiffness

Some less serious side effects may not need emergency medical attention but it is recommended that you consult your doctor if you experience any of the following side effects:

• facial flushing during administration
• eye irritation or over production of tears
• darkening of nail beds and skin folds
• temporary hair loss
• change in the color of urine to red

Adriamycin Drug Reactions

Talk to your doctor first before taking Adriamycin if you have been previously treated with drugs containing doxorubicin.

Also some other medicines may unfavorably interact with Adriamycin. Consult with your doctor if you are taking the following medicines:

• paclitaxel
• progesterone
• verapamil
• cyclosporine
• cyclophosphamide
• Phenobarbital
• Phenytoin
• Streptozocin
