Mestinon (Pyridostigmine)

Mestinon Information

Mestinon is a type of a cholinergic agent. It mainly acts by the inhibition of cholinesterase. Mestinon enhances cholinergic action by facilitating the transmission of impulses across neuromuscular junctions.

Mestinon Indications

Mestinon is indicated to decrease muscle weakness resulting from Myasthenia gravis. Mestinon may also be used for other purposes not mentioned here.

Mestinon Warnings

Mestinon belong in the FDA pregnancy category B. Mestinon may cause severe damage to an unborn baby. Consult your doctor first before you use Mestinon if you are pregnant or could become pregnant during the treatment period.

It is not known whether Mestinon passes into the breast milk of nursing mothers. Therefore, it is not known whether Mestinon may affect the breast-feeding infant. Consult your doctor first before you use Mestinon if you are breast-feeding a baby.

Do not use Mestinon if you are allergic to one or any of its components or ingredients. Tell your doctor first before you use Mestinon if you have experience such allergic reactions previously.

Mestinon is strictly not advice for use in patients with the following conditions:

History reaction to bromides
Peritonitis, the mechanical obstruction of the intestinal or urinary tract.
Asthma
Nasal Polyps
Persistent runny nose
Severe liver disease
Severe kidney disease

Exercise extreme caution in dealing Mestinon with the following conditions:

Bradycardia
Epilepsy
Bronchial asthma
Vagotonia
Recent coronary occlusion
Hyperthyrodism
Peptic ulcer
Cardiac arrhythmias
Decrease gastrointestinal motility or Megacolon

Mestinon Intake Guidelines

Follow your doctor’s instructions exactly as directed. Do not deviate from any one of his instructions. For further information concerning these matters, you may ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Mestinon Dosage

Obtain your Mestinon dose from your doctor or pharmacist. Dosage of Mestinon medication may vary from person to person.

Mestinon Overdose

Overdose of Mestinon drug may include the following:

Muscle weakness
Dizziness
Flushes
Restlessness
Ringing in the ears
Warm feeling
Sweating

If you experience any of the above-listed symptoms of Mestinon overdose, call your doctor immediately or you may seek for any other alternative immediate medical attention. Tell also your doctor if you feel any other unusual effects caused by Mestinon.

Mestinon Missed Dose

To get the most desirable results, you should not miss any dose of Mestinon medication.

Immediately take the missed dose of Mestinon medication as soon as you remember it. However, if it is time for your next Mestinon dose, skip the missed one and take your regular scheduled dose of Mestinon drug. It is important not to take a double dose of Mestinon medication.

Mestinon Side Effects

As any other drugs do, Mestinon may also entail some severe and less severe side effects. However it does not mean that everyone taking Mestinon may experience the following side effects cause by Mestinon medication:

Nausea, vomiting, and increased peristalsis
Abdominal cramps and Diarrhea
Increased bronchial secretions
Muscle cramps
Rash and urticaria
Weakness
Allergic reactions
Blurred vision
Slurred speech

Other side effects cause by Mestinon not listed above may also occur. Inform your doctor right away if any one of these side effects continues to occur and tend not to go away. Tell also your doctor if you feel any other unusual or bothersome side effects.

Mestinon Drug Reactions

Several any other medications may interact with the function of Mestinon medication. Consult your doctor first before you take or buy any of the following other dugs:

Antropine
Muscle relaxants such as Succinycholine and Decamethonium
Antibiotics especially Neomycin, Streptomycin, and Kanamycin
Local and some General anesthethics
Antiarrhythmic agents
Neostigmine

Other drugs or medication not listed above that may interact with the work of Mestinon may also occur. Tell your doctor first before you take any other prescription or over-the-counter medicine, as well as herbal products.
