Neoral (a medicine that is also generically known as Cyclosporine) belongs to a wide class of drugs known under the name of immunosuppressants. Such medicines are known to decrease the organism’s immune system’s effects and actions. Before you start taking cyclosporine, you should alert your physician if you have:

• kidney disease;
• liver disease;
• high blood pressure;
• cancer;
• a viral, fungal or bacterial infection;
• undergone treatment with UVB, PUVA, coal tar, methotrexate (Rheumatrex, Immunex), other immunosuppressants or radiation;
• any other chronic or severe medical condition.

If you have any of the conditions that have been listed here, you might not be allowed to start taking this medicine, or you might have to take a lower dose of Neoral. This medicine is a category C FDA pregnancy drug. Therefore, it has not been determined whether a treatment with this medicine during pregnancy could harm a growing fetus or not. If you are pregnant, or if you plan to be so anytime soon, you should ask for your physician’s advice before you start taking this medicine. It is known that Cyclosporine can and does pass into breast milk, thus harming a nursing child. Do not take this drug without your physician’s consent if you are nursing an infant.

During your treatment with this medicine, you should avoid eating grapefruit or drinking grapefruit juice, unless your personal physician has advised you to. Neoral Intake Guidelines

Follow each and every one of the advices that your doctor has given you regarding your treatment with Neoral (do not deviate from any of them). Each dose of this drug is normally accompanied by a glass of water. Try to take it regularly (at the same hour(s) each day). You should take this medicine 1 hour after or before one of your meals. You may mix a solution of Neoral with orange or apple juice, but you should avoid combining it with milk or grapefruit juice.
