NIZORAL (KETOCONAZOLE)

Nizoral Information

Nizoral is a popular drug that is also widely known under the name of Ketoconazole. This medicine is an antifungal drug (an antibiotic that fights against fungal infections). This medicine is commonly prescribed in the treatment of yeast infections of the throat, mouth and esophagus, serious skin and nail fungal infections, etc.

You should not start a treatment with Ketoconazole if you are currently taking cisapride (Propulsid), astemizole (Hismanal), midazolam (Versed) or triazolam (Halcion). If it is combined with any of these medicines, Nizoral could cause severe (sometimes even lethal) side effects.

In some rare cases, a treatment with Nizoral has triggered serious liver damage (that sometimes leaded to the death of the patient). You should alert your personal physician as soon as possible if you start experiencing vomiting, nausea, unusual fatigue, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, yellow eyes or skin, dark urine, itching, clay-colored stools, etc, because these could be the early liver damage symptoms.

You must not stop your treatment with Nizoral without your physician’s approval even if you start to feel better after a few days of treatment, because in some cases the symptoms begin to improve even if the infection is not completely cured.

Before you start taking Ketoconazole, you should alert your personal physician if you are suffering from:

• achlorhydria (a decreased production of stomach acid);
• liver disease; 
• if you are taking antacids, stomach ulcer drugs or stomach acid reducers.

Nizoral Intake Guidelines

You should take in each dose of this drug with a glass of water. Nizoral is not known to be a stomach irritant. Therefore you can try taking it on an empty stomach. If you start having stomach cramps, try taking the drug with milk or food. Nizoral is usually prescribed to be taken only once per day. In order to get all the benefits out of your treatment with this medicine, you should take in this drug regularly. It is recommended that you should store this medicine away from heat and moisture (in a cool and dry location). Keep this drug in a place that is far from the reach of pets and children, in order to prevent unwanted accidents. Nizoral Missed Dose

You should stop your treatment with Nizoral if you are experiencing any of these severe side effects: allergic reactions (throat closing; difficulty breathing; swelling of the lips, face or tongue; or hives);

• liver damage (yellow skin or eyes; pale stools; abdominal pain or discomfort; dark urine or unusual fatigue).

There are other less severe side effects (but more common) side effects that could be triggered by a treatment with Nizoral. You may continue your treatment with this medicine, but you should alert your personal physician if you experience any of the following side effects:

• nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting;
• headache;
• diarrhea;
• fatigue;
• dizziness;
• itching.

Other side effects that have not been mentioned here may also occur when you take Nizoral. Inform your physician immediately if you experience anything unusual while taking this medicine.
