Calciferol Information

Calciferol is a drug with the generic name called ergocalciferol, which is a vitamin D2 that is important for the functioning of calcium in the body and for the absorption of calcium from the stomach.

Calciferol Indications

Calciferol is used in the treatment of the following:

• refractory rickets or vitamin-D resistant rickets
• familial hypophosphatemia
• hypoparathyroidism

Calciferol Warnings

Patients who have high level of calcium or vitamin D in the body is not recommended to take Calciferol.

Talk to your doctor if you experience any of the following before taking Calciferol:

• kidney disease
• kidney stones
• liver disease
• biliary disease
• heart disease
• stomach or malabsorption problems
• circulation problems

If you take any of the medications listed above you may not be able to take Calciferol, or you may require a lower dose or special monitoring during your therapy. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist for more information.

Calciferol is listed in the FDA pregnancy category C, which means that it is not known whether; doses of Calciferol more than the recommended daily allowance will harm an unborn baby. Talk to your doctor if you are pregnant before taking Calciferol or any supplemental medicine.

Calciferol passes into breast milk. Patients breast-feeding an infant are advised not to take Calciferol without first telling your doctor.

Calciferol Intake Guidelines

A full glass of water should be taken along with the recommended proper dose.

Calciferol should be swallowed whole and tablets or capsules should not be crushed or chewed.

Except under the supervision of your doctor, magnesium supplements or antacids that contain magnesium should not be taken if you are on chronic renal dialysis.

Calciferol Dosage

Calciferol should be taken exactly as directed by your doctor or as directed on the package. Ask your pharmacist, nurse, or doctor to explain them to you if you do not understand these directions.

Calciferol Overdose

Symptoms of an overdose of Calciferol includes the following:

• irregular heartbeat
• abdominal pain
• nausea
• vomiting
• dry mouth
• decreased appetite
• constipation
• weakness
• headache
• metallic taste in the mouth

Seek immediate medical attention if an overdose of Calciferol occurs.

Calciferol Missed Dose

The missed dose should be taken as soon as you recall. However, skip the missed dose and take only your next regularly scheduled dose if it is almost time for your next dose. A double dose of this medication should not be taken.

Calciferol Side Effects

Seek immediate medical attention or notify your doctor and stop taking Calciferol if you experience any of the following side effects:

• irregular heartbeat
• nausea
• vomiting
• dry mouth
• constipation
• weakness
• headache
• metallic taste in the mouth
• drowsiness
• muscle pain
• bone pain

Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Any side effect that seems unusual or that is especially troublesome should be informed to your doctor urgently.

Calciferol Drug Reactions

Tell your doctor, before taking Calciferol if you are taking any of the following medicines:

• digoxin such as Lanoxin and Lanoxicaps
• antacids that contain magnesium
• Cholestyramine such as Questran
• mineral oil

You may need special monitoring or you may require a dosage adjustment during treatment if you are taking any of the medicines listed above, or you may not be able to take Calciferol.
