Prilosec (Omeprazole)

Prilosec Information

Prilosec is a drug that is known in Canada as Losec. Prilosec, aside from its other name, is known by its generic name Omeprazole. Prilosec medication works by treating the overproduction of acid in the stomach.

Prilosec Indications

Prilosec is indicated for the treatment of Gastric and Duodenal Ulcers, as well as Gastroesophageal reflux disease. Prilosec can also be used to treat ulcers, especially those associated with infection. It can also be used to treat Zollinger-Ellison Disease or the overproduction of acid in the stomach.

Prilosec can also be used to treat Dyspepsia, the disease responsible for sour stomach, belching, heartburn and indigestion.

Prilosec Warnings

If a patient has any allergic reactions to Prilosec or any of its components, the individual should explain this to their doctor before deciding to take Prilosec.

The effects of Prilosec during pregnancy have not been tested on humans. It has, however, been tested on animals and studies have shown that Prilosec can cause harm to the unborn fetus.

The active ingredient of Prilosec, Omeprazole, has a tendency to be passed into the breast milk. Upon administering Prilosec on nursing animals, it has been found that the animals that were nursed by mothers given Prilosec had the tendency to develop tumors and cancer. Use Prilosec with caution or talk to your doctor about using this drug if you are breastfeeding.

You should also tell your doctor if you have had a history of liver disease or liver problems, as this condition may worsen if you take Prilosec.

Prilosec Intake Guidelines

Take Prilosec immediately before a meal. The most preferable time of intake is in the morning. This medicine can be taken with or without food, as it will not cause stomach upset.

Do not chew or break the tablet or capsule. You should swallow the tablet or capsule whole.

Prilosec Dosage

The recommended dosages are as follows:

• 20 mg to be taken once daily for up to 4 weeks

• 20 mg once daily to be taken from four to eight weeks.

• 60 mg once a day for as long as your doctor prescribed the duration.

• 20 mg to 40 mg once a day depending on your doctor's prescription

• 40 mg a day for up to four to weeks

• 40 mg once a day to be taken along with clarithromycin 500 three times a day for fourteen days.

Prilosec Overdose

When symptoms of overdose are suspected, seek medical attention immediately.

Prilosec Missed Dose

If you miss a dose Prilosec, take it as soon as possible. However, if the time for the next dose is already near, entirely skip the missed dose, proceed with the next one and return to your normal intake schedule.

Prilosec Side Effects

The following side effects may occur depending on the susceptibility of the patient and the dose given:

• Stomach pains
• Leg pains
• Back pains
• Bleeding or crusting of lips
• Blisters
• Bloody urine
• Fever
• Painful urination
• Loss of appetite
• Rashes and itching
• Peeling of skin
• Sore throat
• Lip ulcers, sore lips and white spots on lips
• Ulcers in genitals
• Unusual bleeding
• Unusual tiredness or weakness

If you experience any of the side effects listed and it becomes intolerable or bothersome, consult your doctor immediately.

Prilosec Drug Reactions

Prilosec should not be used together with:

• Anticoagulants such as Coumadin
• Diazepam
• Phenytoin � the combined effect of Prilosec and Phenytoin may cause high blood pressure
