Prometrium Information

Progesterone (one of Prometrium’s main ingredients) is a well known female sex hormone that is vital in the regulation of menstruation and ovulation. A treatment with Prometrium is known to cause menstrual periods in pre-menopausal female patients who lack their monthly periods because of a lack of this sex hormone. This product is a medicine that can also be prescribed in the effectively preventing the uterus lining from overgrowing (especially in the case of postmenopausal female patients who undergo an estrogen replacement treatment).

A treatment with Prometrium during pregnancy could severely harm a growing fetus, leading to dangerous birth defects. If you are pregnant you should ask your personal physician if you may start taking this medicine. Most female patients who are following a treatment with this product (and who are not pregnant) should use an effective contraceptive method (such as condoms, diaphragm, etc) in order to prevent an unwanted pregnancy. It has been determined that this medicine’s components can and do pass into the patient’s breast milk. Therefore, if you are nursing an infant, you should ask your personal doctor if you may start taking this product.

This medicine is known to contain peanut oil. If you are suffering from a known allergic reaction to peanuts you should not start taking this medicine. Before you start a treatment with Prometrium you should inform your personal health care provider if you are allergic to any foods, dyes, preservatives or any other products (this includes other drugs). A treatment with Prometrium is known to increase the patient’s risk of developing blood clots, heart attack, stroke, or Breast Cancer. A treatment with this medicine can sometimes last very little (from 6 to 12 days). However, such a treatment should be repeated each month.

Before you start taking Prometrium, you should alert your personal health care provider if you have:

• blood clotting disorder or stroke;
• any type of hormone-related cancer (like uterine or Breast Cancer);
• circulation problems;
• severe liver disorder;
• unusual vaginal bleeding;
• heart disorder, high blood pressure, congestive heart failure;
• asthma;
• migraine;
• Epilepsy or any other type of seizure disorder;
• kidney disease;
• diabetes;
• depression.

Patients who have any of the medical conditions that have been listed above might not be allowed to start taking Prometrium or should be prescribed a lower dose of this medicine. Their treatment with this product should be carefully monitored by an authorized health care provider.

Prometrium Intake Guidelines

Ask your personal physician how and when to start taking and to take Prometrium. Do not deviate from any of his or her instructions. If you have any further questions about your treatment with this medicine you should ask a pharmacist or a nurse to properly explain them to you. If you are taking the pill form of Prometrium, you should accompany it with a full glass of liquid (such as juice or water). Store this medicine away from heat and / or moisture. It is best to keep it in a cool, dry place (not near the kitchen sink or in the bathroom) that is far from the reach of both pets and children.

It is important to try to take your prescribed doses of Prometrium at their due time. However, if you happen to miss one of your doses if this medicine, you should contact your personal physician and ask him or her for further instructions. Do not use double doses of this drug without your physician’s approval.

Prometrium Side Effects

Prometrium’s severe side effects include:

• sudden weakness or numbness;
• breast lumps;
• pounding heartbeat chest pain,;
• sudden confusion, headache, vision, balance or speech problems;
• migraine;
• depression (weakness, sleep problems, mood changes);
• nausea, low fever, jaundice, stomach pain, dark urine, loss of appetite, clay-colored stools;
• chills, fever, flu-like symptoms, body aches;
• swelling of your ankles, hands, or feet.

Prometrium’s less severe but more common side effects include:

• mild bloating, diarrhea, nausea, stomach cramps;
• weight changes;
• mild headache;
• dizziness;
• muscle pain;
• breast tenderness or pain;
• acne;
• feeling irritable;
• cough;
• vaginal dryness, itching, or discharge.
