Senokot Information

Senokot is a well known and very powerful laxative that helps patients suffering from constipation. Senokot’s main ingredients are some extracts taken from the Senna plant. These extracts help regularize bowel movements. Sekonot’s action concentrates on the nerve ends situated in the gut wall. The drug forces these nerves to make the intestinal muscles contract more frequently. By making the muscles contract faster, with more power and more frequently, the drug makes the bowel to move faster, thus relieving constipation. Although this drug is considered a true wonder medicine of the bowel, taking this drug may lead to increased abdominal cramps. It takes from 8 to 12 hours for the drug to complete its action. This drug is very gentle to the bowel, therefore it is used by doctors in other treatments (beside the ones against constipation) as well.

Senokot has not been analyzed by the FDA yet. Therefore, if you are pregnant or are planning to be so soon, it is best that you consult with your physician before you start a treatment with Senokot. It is not known whether this drug can pass into breast milk or not, so you should talk to a doctor before taking this drug if you are breast feeding an infant. Before you start a treatment with Senokot you should ask a doctor how and when to take your doses. Senokot is usually taken in before bedtime. Avoid taking this laxative for a period longer than a week (you should talk to a doctor before starting a long-term treatment). Store the drug away from light, moisture and heat.

Senokot Overdose

Senokot is prescribed in the treatment of some very serious disorders. Therefore it is a drug that must be administered with care. No deaths caused by overdose with Senokot have been reported, but specialists do not rule out fatal effects of this condition. The symptoms of Senokot overdose have not been established.

A treatment with Senokot can lead to some unpleasant side effects such as breathing trouble, throat closing, swelling of the face, lips or tongue, effects that can lead to death.
Patients should avoid prolonged treatments with this drug as they can cause colon pigmentation, chronic diarrhea (that is accompanied by nutrient and electrolyte loss), enlargement of fingers and toes. This drug can also determine chronic constipation (one of its withdrawal symptoms).  
The most frequent side effects of Senokot are abdominal cramps, discolorated urine, diarrhea, etc. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms you should contact your physician.
