Betnovate Information

Betnovate-C is a drug also known under the generic name of Celestoderm V. This medicine helps patients who are suffering from bacterial or fungal infections. This drug belongs to a wide class of drugs also known as corticosteroids.

Betnovate Indications

Betnovate-C is a skin preparation that is mostly prescribed by physicians in the treatment against medical conditions such as the following: eczema (this includes atopic, discoid and infantile eczema), psoriasis (this does not include the widespread psoriasis plaque), prurigo nodularis, neurodermatoses (such as lichen simplex and  lichen planus), contact sensitivity allergies or reactions, seborrhoeic dermatitis, allergies or reactions to insect bite, genital and anal intertrigo, prickly heat, Otitis Externa if the patient is also suffering from a secondary fungal or bacterial infection (or if such an infection is likely to affect the patient soon). 

Betnovate Warnings

Patients should try to avoid continuous long-term topical treatments with this drug as much as they can, especially if the patient is a child under the age of 18. In these cases (where the patient is an infant) adrenal suppression sometimes occurs without occlusion. Other disorders that might seriously harm both children and adults are hypothalamic-pituitary axis suppression and sometimes even systemic absorption. If the treatment is followed for more than 4 weeks it can trigger other disorders such as atrophic striae (therefore, prolonged use of this drug on flexures or in most intertriginous areas should be avoided as much as possible). The patient’s face is more likely than any other parts of the patient’s body to exhibit some atrophic changes (if the treatment with Betnovate-C (Celestoderm V) lasts for more than 4 weeks). If this drug is to be applied on one of the patient’s eyelids, one should make sure that Betnovate does not come to direct contact with the eye (it must not enter the eye) because this is known to cause glaucoma. Like most topical steroids, Betnovate can become hazardous in the case of psoriasis because of a couple of reasons, that also includes development of tolerance, rebound relapses, increased risk of developing generalized pustular psoriasis and, in some cases, development of systemic or local toxicity (this is mostly due to a impaired barrier skin function). If a patient suffering from psoriasis needs to be carefully monitored during the treatment, in order for the doctors (specialists) to be able to check the way in which his body reacts to the treatment.  
Occlusive dressings tend to encourage the development of most known bacterial infections, because occlusive dressings practically create the perfect moist and warm conditions for them to develop. Therefore, it is recommended that the skin ought to be carefully cleaned before you apply a new Betnovate-C dressing. This drug can and does stain skin, hair and fabric. In order to prevent this, you should cover with a dressing the application of the drug, to protect your clothes. Betnovate Intake Guidelines

Ask you doctor how you should apply this drug. Normally, a small amount should be applied on the affected area (from two to three times each day) until you can see some improvements. Then, you should continue your treatment with only one application per day. The Betnovate-C cream has proven to be more effective for weeping or moist surfaces, while the ointment works best for scaly, dry or lichenified lesions. You should not use Celestoderm V if the infection with fungi or bacteria is your primary lesion of the area, if this is a yeast infection, if the patient is a child (under 1 year of age) who is suffering from dermatoses. Store the drug at a temperature below 25°C.

Although few cases of serious overdose with this drug have been reported, you should contact your local poison control center if you experience any hypercortisolism features.

Betnovate Side Effects

Betnovate can trigger pruritus or local skin burning. If you have followed an intensive long-term treatment with this drug you may experience local skin atrophic changes (for example striae or thinning, mostly when the patient has used occlusive dressings or when the skin folds). There are however rare cases in which a treatment with this drug has caused a pustular form of the disease it was supposed to treat.
