Captol Information

Captol is a drug classified as a prescription medicine with the active ingredient called oxprenolol hydrochloride, which is a non-selective and lipophilic beta-blocker.

Captol lowers the risk of substantial bradycardia and heart failure.

Captol helps in increasing exercise tolerance and decreasing the frequency and grimness of anginal attacks in coronary artery disease.

Captol alleviates emotional stress and anxiety states.

Captol effectively lowers elevated supine, standing and exertional blood pressure.

Captol Indications

Captol is indicated for the following:

• Hypertension
• Angina pectoris
• Supraventricular tachycardia
• Atrial fibrillation
• Ventricular tachycardia
• Cardiac neurosis
• Hyperkinetic heart syndrome
• Psychogenic cardiovascular disorders

Captol Warnings

Patients receiving any treatment with a beta-blocker must not be administered a calcium antagonist of the verapamil type.

Patients who are at increased risk for anaphylaxis should avoid Captol or any medication with beta-blocker.

Treatment should not be discontinued suddenly but the dosage should gradually be reduced especially in patients with ischaemic heart disease to prevent exacerbation of angina pectoris.

Captol should be used with caution during pregnancy especially in the first 3 months, as in any form of medicine therapy. Lowest possible dose of Captol should be taken. This medication might reduce perfusion of the placenta. To avoid effects on uterine contractility and any possible neonatal complications, discontinue use of Captol for at least 2 to 3 days.

Captol passes into breast milk. Infants should be carefully observed for bradycardia and other symptoms although very little infant dose is derived from breast-feeding.

Patients taking Captol should not do anything that requires alertness such as driving, operating a certain machine if you consume alcohol. The following might occur:

• Dizziness
• Fatigue
• Visual disturbances

Captol Intake Guidelines

Treatment of Captol should not be stopped abruptly. The dosage taken should be gradually reduced.

The heart rate at rest should always be checked before raising the dosage of Captol. The dosage should not be increased if your heart beats 50-55 per minute. The Captol tablets should be swallowed whole with liquid to avoid occurrence of high peak concentrations in the plasma.

Captol Dosage

It is recommended that the dosage given should be individualized:

• Hypertension: 80-160 mg of Captol is given either as a single dose or in two divided doses daily. The dosage can be raised to 320 mg if necessary.
• Angina pectoris: 80-160 mg of Captol is given in 1 to 3 doses daily. The dosage can be raised to 320 mg if necessary.
• Cardiac rhythm disturbances: 20-80 mg of Captol is given 2-3 times daily.
• Functional cardiovascular disorders: 40-80 mg of Captol is given in 1 or 2 doses daily.

Captol is not recommended for children use.

Appropriate combined therapy should be considered if the maximum recommended dose is insufficient to produce the desired response. Conventional tablets of Captol may be administered in two or more divided doses for higher doses.

Captol Overdose

Poisoning due to an over dosage of Captol may lead to:

• Pronounced hypotension
• Bradycardia
• Hypoglycaemia
• Heart failure
• Cardiogenic shock
• Conduction abnormalities
• Complete heart block
• Asystole
• Cardiac arrest
• Dyspnoea
• Bronchospasm
• Vomiting
• Impairment of consciousness
• Generalized convulsions may occur

Pharmacological properties of the ingested substance affect the manifestation of poisoning with Captol. Effects of massive overdose may persist for several days despite declining plasma levels although the onset of the action is rapid. In the early hours, patients should watch for cardiovascular or respiratory deterioration in an intensive care setting.

Seek immediate medical attention if poisoning occurs. Patients who recover should be observed for signs of beta-blocker withdrawal phenomenon.

Captol Missed Dose

Take the missed dose as you recall. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip only the missed dose and take the next regularly scheduled missed dose.

Captol Side Effects

Rare and common side effects of Captol to the central nervous system include:

• Fatigue
• Dizziness
• Headache
• Mental depression
• Sleep disturbance
• Nightmares
• Hallucinations
• Exertional tiredness

Common and uncommon side effects of Captol to the cardiovascular system include:

• Hypotension
• Heart failure
• Peripheral vascular disorders
• Bradycardia
• Cardiac conduction disturbances

Side effects to the gastrointestinal tract include:

• dry mouth
• constipation
• nausea
• diarrhoea
• vomiting
• flatulence

Side effects on the skin and appendages include:

• urticarial
• psoriasiform
• eczematous
• lichenoid

Side effects to the respiratory system includes:

• dyspnoea
• bronchospasm

Side effects to the sense organs include:

• visual disturbances
• dry eyes
• keratoconjunctivitis
• libido disturbance
• potency
• thrombocytopenia

Captol Drug Reactions

Some medicines may have an additive effect on the effectiveness of Captol. Talk to your doctor for more information on the following:

• Calcium channel blockers such as verapmil and diltiazen
• Anti-arrhythmic agents and Amiodarone such as disopyramide, quinidine and Amiodarone
• Sympathomimetic agents such as Adrenaline, noradrenaline, isoprenaline, ephedrine, and phenylephrine
• Clonidine
• Catecholamine-depleting agents such as guanethidine
• Insulin and oral antidiabetic agents
• Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents s uch as Indomethacin
