Lyderm Information

Lyderm is a drug that belongs in the steroid class of medicines. A topical corticosteroid, it is mainly used to help relieve redness, swelling, itching and discomfort caused by many skin problems.

Lyderm Indications

Lyderm is a medicine prescribed for the treatment of skin problems, mainly redness, swelling, itching or to relieve the discomfort caused by other skin diseases. Your personal health care specialist may prescribe you treatment with this medicine for a number of other affections as well.

Lyderm Warnings

You should always consult with your personal health care specialist before starting Lyderm treatment. You should ensure that your prescribing doctor is fully aware of your entire medical record. Lyderm should never be prescribed to a person that is allergic to corticosteroids. Allergies to other substances might be relevant, so tell your personal health care specialist about any allergies that you might have, to foods, preservatives, dyes and so on.
While Lyderm treatment usually doesn't have any effect on pregnancy, laboratory studies have shown that prolonged treatment with large quantities of the product may yield in birth defects. It is recommended that you talk with your personal physician before starting treatment with this medicine if you are pregnant or planning to be in the near future. While Lyderm doesn't have any adverse effects during breastfeeding, it is advised that you should not apply the medicine on the breast shortly before nursing. Special observation might be in order in the treatment of children and elder patients, due to their increased sensitivity of the skin. Side effects may occur more often, or the discomfort caused by them may be greater than in adult patients.

Among the clinical conditions that may affect your Lyderm treatment, some of the more common ones are:

Cataracts or glaucoma (as the corticosteroids may make the symptoms of these affections worse, especially when applied close to the eyes)
Diabetes mellitus – heavy usage of corticosteroids may result in a loss of control of the diabetes, by increasing the blood and urine glucose quantities. These effects should not appear during short time treatments.
Infections or sores on the affected area – with the exception of the cases where the prescribing doctor also prescribed a treatment for the infection
Tuberculosis, as Lyderm may worsen the infections or cause new ones
Skin conditions that cause a thinning or bruising of the skin, as corticosteroids can make the symptoms of these conditions worse.

Lyderm Intake Guidelines

You should always pay close attention when applying this medicine. It is recommended that you avoid all contact of the product with the eyes. Thoroughly wash your hands after using your fingers to apply Lyderm. If you accidentally get this medicine in your eyes, flush them repeatedly with clean water. You should never bandage or otherwise cover the treated skin unless otherwise directed by your personal health care specialist. If your personal physician has advised occlusive dressing for the treated area, make sure you know how to properly apply the cover. Occlusive dressing causes more of the medicine to pass into the skin, thus increasing the chance for side effects to appear, so you should pay very close attention to the directions that your doctor has given you. You should try to avoid using Lyderm on the face, groin or armpits, unless otherwise advised by your personal health care specialist.

Lyderm Dosage

The Lyderm dosage may vary greatly from one person to another, so it is strongly advised that you follow your personal health care specialist's direction closely. You should never alter the Lyderm dosage that you have been prescribed, and you should never use the dosage prescribed to another person.

Lyderm Overdose

The exact symptoms of Lyderm overdose are not yet clearly established. Should you have reasons to believe that you are suffering from an overdose with this drug, contact your personal physician or go to the nearest hospital to get medical assistance.

Lyderm Missed Dose

If Lyderm treatment has been recommended to you by your personal health care specialist, you should be very careful not to miss any applications. Should you miss one, however, it is advised that you apply it as soon as you remember, and continue with your regular schedule. If it is almost time for another Lyderm application, skip the missed one entirely and proceed with your regular schedule.

Lyderm Side Effects

Lyderm usage can cause some side effects. Acne is one of the most common, as well as oily skin, and if the product is used too close to the eyes there may appear a gradual blurring of vision coupled with eye pain that can extend, in severe cases, to complete loss of vision. Other symptoms that have been reported are burning and itching of the skin with small blisters, filling or rounding out of the face, irregular heartbeat, increased blood pressure, irregular menstrual periods, irritability, irritation of the skin around the mouth, loss of appetite, mental depression, muscle cramp, pain or weakness, nausea, rapid weight changes (either gain or loss), the appearance of reddish purple lines, or stretch marks on arms, legs, groin, torso, groin or face, skin color changes, softening of the skin, stomach trouble, such as bloating, aching, burning or cramping; swelling of the feet or lower legs, tearing of the skin or unusual bruising, unusual increase in hair growth (especially on the face), unusual hair loss, unusual tiredness or weakness, vomiting, severe weakness of the arms, legs or trunk, worsening of infections. Lyderm usage can also cause a decrease in the male sex drive.

Lyderm Drug Reactions

To this point, there are no known Lyderm drug reactions. However, it is advised that you should consult with your personal health care specialist concerning any other medicines you are currently using or planning to use in the near future on the same area of skin.
