Imatinib Information

Imatinib Warnings

Imatinib can sometimes cause a certain decrease in your normal number of blood cells. This is why you should inform your doctor immediately if you are experiencing any of these symptoms: abnormal bleeding or bruising, purple spots on the skin, sore throat, fever, mouth ulcers, tiredness or general illness. A treatment with Imatinib can sometimes cause liver problems. Inform your doctor at once if you develop unnatural itching, yellowing of the skin or of the eyes, darker urine, vomiting or nausea, abdominal pains, changes in your appetite (losses of appetite) or other flu-like symptoms.

During an Imatinib treatment, you should take regular blood tests which will enable your doctor to continuously monitor your liver function and to spot any abnormal changes in your number of blood cells in a timely manner. Imatinib may irritate the stomach and gut; therefore it is recommended that you take the drug with plenty of water and food. If the patient is unable to swallow the Imatinib capsules, they can be dissolved in a glass of water (still water) or apple juice.

If you are allergic to Imatinib or to any of its ingredients, we recommend that you do not start an Imatinib treatment. Although the effects of Imatinib on pregnancy are not known, the drug is likely to have a harmful effect on the foetus. It is not known either if the drug is able to pass into the breast milk, therefore mothers who breast feed their babies should not start a treatment with Imatinib.

Imatinib Side effects

Below is a small list of some of Imatinib‘s side effects: Insomnia, headaches, blurred vision,  general state of depression, muscle cramps, tiredness, diarrhea, constipation, vomiting or abdominal pain, epistaxis, fever, paraesthesia, dizziness, eye inflammation which can cause causing pain and conjunctivitis, dry skin, anaemia, changes in appetite, excessive retention of fluid in the tissues (which normally leads to swellings), loss of hair (Alopecia), neutropenia, thrombocytopenia, liver problems, itching and rash, abdominal bleedings ( in the case of GIST patients). It is not advisable to combine Imatinib with Warfarin; therefore patients who are in need of an anticoagulation treatment should take a heparin instead of Warfarin.

Imatinib Overdose

Although there have been reported (very isolated) cases of Imatinib overdose, there have not been many cases of patients taking a dose greater than 800mg. If you suspect an overdose of Imatinib, you should seek immediate medical attention.

Imatinib Usage guidelines

Imatinib must not be stored at a temperature above 30°C. The drug should be kept away from moisture and it should not be left within the reach of children.
