Carbocisteine Information

Carbocisteine belongs to the class of drug Mucolytic. It is used for the reduction of sputum viscosity. Carbocisteine is a derivative of acetylcysteine. Its major action is on the metabolism of mucus producing cells. Carbocisteine leads to production of mucus with increased Sialomucin content. Sialomucins influence the rheological properties of mucus and may also, through inhibition of kinins, reduce or prevent bronchial inflammation and bronchospasm. It results in a reduction of hyperplasia of the goblet cells, which is another pathological finding in most respiratory tract disorders. Carbocisteine is indicated especially for chronic respiratory conditions like bronchitis, bronchial obstruction as in asthma, bronchiectasis, upper respiratory tract congestion, glue ear, Otitis media, eustachian cattarrah, sinusitis, rhinopharyngitis

Carbocisteine Warnings

There have been rare reports of skin rashes or gastro-intestinal bleeding occurring during treatment Patients with P/H/O Peptic ulcer Contra-indications: Active peptic ulceration.

Carbocisteine Side effects

Occasional gastro-intestinal irritation.

Carbocisteine Usage guidelines

In Adults 2 capsules three times a day, reducing to 1 capsule three times a day when satisfactory response has been obtained.
