Cephazolin Information

Cephazolin is a sodium injection, which is made up of semi synthetic cephalosporin. Cephalosporin is the generic name of Cephazolin. Cephazolin can be a muscular injection or an intravenous injection. Cephazolin works by counter-acting the cell-wall synthesis.

Cephazolin Indications

Cephazolin is prescribed for the inhibition of infections caused by the following:

• Staphylococcus Aureus
• Staphylococcus Epidermis
• Proteus mirabilis
• Escherichia coli
• Enterobacter aerogenes.
• Streptococcus pneumoniae
• Klebsiella sp

Cephazolin is indicated for the treatment of infections in the respiratory tract, genitourinary tract, skin and skin suture infections, biliary infections, bone and joint infections, septicemia, endocarditis, and perioperative prohylaxis.

Cephazolin Warnings

Cephazolin should be administered with caution to patients with known or unknown allergies to penicillin and the by products of penicillin.

Serious allergic reactions may cause fatalities.

Pseudo membranous colitis is also likely to occur to patients who are taking this antibiotic. Diarrhea has been reported in patients taking this antibiotic so be cautious when diarrhea occurs as it may signify a more serious case of colitis.

The safety of usage of this antibiotic has not yet been proven and tested in infants and babies aged one year old and below.

Allergic reactions are the most common consequence of using this medicine and if allergic reactions occur, immediately discontinue use and immediately apply anti-allergic medicines such as pressor amines, antihistamines, and corticosteroids.

Intrathecal administration of Cephazolin is strictly not advised as severe Central Nervous System disorders have been reported.
Patients with gastrointestinal problems should be given Cephazolin with caution as they may develop colitis and are more susceptible to it.

Cephazolin is fairly safe for use in pregnant women. Studies have shown that it can do no harm to the pregnant woman or the fetus she is carrying. But it is still important that you inform your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant before deciding to undergo Cephazolin medication.

Nursing mothers should also be extra careful when on Cephazolin medication as it passes into the breast milk and may cause harm to the nursing baby. If you are a nursing mother, consult your doctor before breastfeeding your baby.

• Leucopenia
• Renal failure

If the above-mentioned symptoms are present and overdose is suspected, immediately seek emergency medical attention.
