Avandamet Instructions

Avandamet, a medication that combines Rosiglitazone and Metformin, is used along with a diet and exercise program to control high blood sugar in diabetic patients. Avandamet works by helping to restore the body's proper response to the insulin naturally produced by the body. Controlling high blood sugar helps to prevent heart disease, strokes, kidney disease, blindness, circulation problems, as well as sexual function problems (such as impotence). Use of this medication is not recommended with insulin therapy.

Avandamet Warnings

The Metformin in this combination medication can cause a rare condition called lactic acidosis, which can be fatal. Seek immediate medical attention if you develop any of the following symptoms of lactic acidosis:

• Unusual tiredness (fatigue) or severe drowsiness
• Cold skin
• Muscle pain
• Breathing trouble or rapid breathing
• Unusually slow or irregular heartbeat

Lactic acidosis is more likely to occur in patients who have:

• Serious infections
• Had surgery
• Kidney or liver disease
• Poor circulation conditions (e.g. severe congestive heart failure, recent heart attack or stroke)
• Excessive alcohol use
• A lack of body fluids (dehydration)
• X-ray or scanning procedures that require an injectable iodinated contrast drug
• Metabolic acidosis (e.g., diabetic ketoacidosis)
• Type I diabetes (insulin-dependent diabetes)

Avandamet should not be used alongside certain medical conditions and before using it a doctor should be consulted. This drug should not be used with other diabetes medication as very serious interactions may occur. Avandamet Side Effects

Side effects like nausea, stomach upset, diarrhea or a metallic taste in the mouth may occur initially as the body adjusts to the medication. If stomach ailments reoccur later, the doctor should immediately be informed. A late return of stomach symptoms may be due to lactic acidosis. Headache, back pain, joint pain, weight gain, cough or fever may also occur.

• Swelling of the hands or feet (edema)
• Unusual tiredness or weakness
• Sudden weight gain
• Trouble with breathing

To help prevent hypoglycemia, meals should be eaten on a regular schedule. An allergic reaction to Avandamet is unlikely, but immediate medical attention should be sought if it occurs. • Itching
• Swelling
• Dizziness
• Trouble breathing

Avandamet Overdose

If an Avandamet overdose is suspected, the local emergency room should be contacted immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include:

• Rapid or troubled breathing
• Severe drowsiness
• Slow or irregular heartbeat
