Entamizole Information

Entamizole belongs to a group of medicines called amoebicides. It is used to kill amoeba which belongs to a group of organisms known as protozoa. Metronidazole has an antibacterial action as well as an antiprotozoal action. Entamizole kills the amoebas in the bowel (intestinal) lumen but is not effective against organisms in the tissues or other organs in the body. Giardia and the amoeba Entamoeba histolytica are both protozoal parasites which live in the gut. They can sometimes cause infections outside of the gut in other organs of the body. They are caught by eating food or drinking water contaminated by faeces from someone carrying the disease. The combination of diloxanide and metronidazole are effective against infections caused by these organisms.

Entamizole Warnings

Do not drink alcohol while taking Entamizole. Use with caution in blood disorders, Diseases of the central nervous system, impairment of brain function caused by liver disease (hepatic encephalopathy). Entamizole should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Entamizole should not be taken with alcohol as it may cause flushing, abdominal cramps, vomiting and an increased heart rate. It enhances the effect of blood thinning medications such as warfarin and nicoumalone. Blood levels of the following medications are increased when given together with Entamizole : -Phenytoin (antiepileptic) -Fluoruracil (cytotoxic). Phenobarbital decreases the blood levels of Entamizole . An increase in the harmful effects of lithium may be seen when taken with Entamizole. It may reduce the effectiveness of the combined oral contraceptive pill.

Entamizole Side effects

The following are some of the side effects of Entamizole: Abdominal pain; Excess gas in the stomach and intestines (flatulence); Fits (convulsions); Severe swelling of lips, face or tongue (angioedema); Disorder of the peripheral nerves causing weakness and numbness (peripheralneuropathy); Dizziness; Bitter or metallic taste; Itchy rash (urticaria); Sensation of a furry tongue; Darkening of the urine; Itching (pruritus); Skin rashes; Nausea and vomiting; Headache.

Entamizole Overdose

If an overdose of Entamizole is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.
