POLYFAX

Polyfax Information

Polyfax is a medicine available under the form of ointment for the treatment of bacterial infections of the skin. This pharmaceutical preparation is a strong antibiotic based on two main ingredients, Polymyxin B and Bacitracin. These act upon the invasive agents by destroying the cell wall of the susceptible bacteria.

Polyfax Indications

Polyfax is commonly prescribed to patients that are affected by certain bacterial infections of the skin. In some cases, health care specialists may also direct the use of this medicine as a prophylactic agent against such infections, and the medicine may be employed in combination with other preparations for the prevention and treatment of other health problems that are not listed in this guide. If you are interested to learn more regarding the possible uses of Polyfax, or if you are not sure why your prescriber has recommended you a treatment course with this medicine it is best to ask the prescriber or a pharmacist.

Polyfax Warnings

The risk of developing side effects is greater in the case of children, elderly patients or patients whose kidney function is decreased, as well as in situations where Polyfax is used on large areas of skin. Special caution needs to be employed in such cases. Also, special care is advised if the patient is suffering from sensitization to foreign substances or if the area of skin where the ointment needs to be applied presents ulcers.

Polyfax may not be used for the treatment of patients that are allergic to Bacitracin, to Polymyxin B or to similar medicines, or to any of the other ingredients of this pharmaceutical preparation. For a full list of the ingredient substances, please consult the product leaflet or check with a pharmacist.

At this time, the safety of this medicine during pregnancy and lactation has not been established. If you are pregnant or if you are nursing a baby you should check with your personal physician before starting a treatment with Polyfax.

Polyfax Intake Guidelines

Wash your hands thoroughly before and after each Polyfax application. It is also recommended that you wash the area of skin where the preparation is to be applied, and pat dry with a soft towel. Apply the recommended dose to the skin and gently massage the area until it is entirely covered with a thin layer of the medicine. Do not cover or bandage the area unless otherwise recommended by your personal physician. Continue the Polyfax applications for the full therapy duration. Do not stop using this medicine without your physician’s approval.

Polyfax Dosage

Your prescriber will inform you regarding the Polyfax dosage that you need to use with each application, as well as regarding the number of daily applications and the duration of the therapy. You are advised to follow his or her directions closely in order to obtain the best results from the treatment. If you have trouble remembering or understanding any of the directions, consult with the prescriber for more detailed information.

Typically, you will need to use Polyfax twice daily, using a small quantity of the ointment, just enough to cover the entire affected area with a thin layer of medicine with each application. However, if your prescriber’s indications differ from the above, you are advised to follow your physician’s directions.

Polyfax Overdose

An overdose is a critical medical condition which typically results in severe consequences, causing both short and long term health problems for the affected patients. Overdosing is caused by the use of large quantities of medication or the prolonged use of moderate to high doses. In order to avoid becoming affected by an overdose, you are advised to never employ a larger Polyfax dosage than recommended by your prescriber, and to stop using this medicine immediately once your physician tells you to do so.

Polyfax is only available for external use. Do not administer this medicine orally or by any other means.

If you believe that you may be suffering from an overdose with Polyfax, contact the local or regional poisons center immediately. If possible, go to the nearest clinic or hospital, even if no visible symptoms are present. You may require emergency attention from specialized health care professionals.

Polyfax Missed Dose

If you have missed one of your Polyfax applications, you are advised to use the missed dose as soon as you remember about it, unless it is almost time for another application of the medicine. In this case you should completely skip the missed dose and continue with your regular application schedule. You should never use a larger dose of this pharmaceutical preparation in an attempt to make up for a missed dose.

Polyfax Side Effects

As long as you use Polyfax exactly as recommended by the prescribing health care professional, the risk of developing any side effects is greatly reduced. When present, the side effects are typically manifested as local sensitivity reactions, and are expected to go away within a few days, although severe cases may require additional treatment.

The most severe side effect that may occur as a result of Polyfax therapy is an allergic reaction to this medicine or to one of its ingredient substances. Allergic reactions are manifested through such symptoms as hives, itching and rashes, breathing difficulties and swelling of the face, lips or throat. Any such symptoms need to be immediately brought to the attention of your personal physician.

Polyfax Drug Reactions

At this time, there are no known Polyfax drug interactions. However, it is best to inform your prescriber of any other topical medication you are using on the same area of skin before starting a therapy course with this pharmaceutical preparation.
