CHLORQUIN

Chlorquin Information

Chlorquin is a drug based on the main ingredient Chloroquine Phosphate. It has a strong positive amoebicidal, anti-malarial and anti-inflammatory action, also yielding positive results in collagen diseases.

Chlorquin Indications

Due to its strong effects, health care professionals employ Chlorquin in the treatment of such medical affections as amoebic hepatitis, malaria, rheumatoid arthritis and several related collagen diseases. In some cases, health care prescribers may also prescribe this medication as part of the treatment of lupus erythematosus in certain phases of the disease. Patients suffering from other medical conditions may also benefit from a therapy with Chlorquin, and in some situations it may be employed as a prophylactic agent in the prevention of certain affections; it is recommended to consult your prescribing health care professional if you would like to obtain further information regarding the reason you have been recommended a treatment course with this drug.

Chlorquin Warnings

Chlorquin may not be used for the treatment of patients that are allergic to this drug or to any 4-aminoquinoline compounds, or for the treatment of patients that have visual field or retinal changes. Special care should be employed when administering a treatment with Chlorquin to patients that are suffering from or have a medical history of epilepsy, vision disturbances, impaired renal or liver functions or porphyria. Regular testing should be performed in the case of such patients, to detect any early signs of complications, especially in patients that are following a long term or high dose therapy course. Patients that frequently consume alcohol have a higher risk of developing complications and adverse effects. Chlorquin may harm an unborn baby. However, the benefits of the therapy with this medicine in the treatment or prevention of malaria or amoebic hepatitis typically justify the risks.

Chlorquin Intake Guidelines

The exact Chlorquin intake schedule will be determined by the prescribing health care professional along with the dosage appropriate for your situation. It is best that you follow your physician’s indications as the intake schedule may vary from one case to another. Typically, for the suppression of malaria, the treatment requires taking the medication dosage for 6 weeks or more, on the same day each week. The therapy will begin 2 weeks before exposure and will continue for a period of time depending on the exposure timeframe – the therapy may not end less than 4 weeks after the patient is no longer exposed to the disease. For the treatment of other medical affections, different administration plans may apply. As such, only follow the indications provided by the prescribing health care provider.

Chlorquin Dosage

The exact Chlorquin dosage will vary from one case to another depending on the medical affection that is being treated or prevented as well as on a number of other case specific factors. Typical suppression treatment for malaria requires a dosage of 2 tablets per week in adults and children over the age of 8 (the dosage will change for younger children). In the case of amoebic hepatitis, the initial dosage is of 4 tablets daily followed by maintenance therapy of 2 tablets per day. Patients suffering from lupus erythematosus may be recommended an initial treatment of two Chlorquin tablets per day continued with maintenance therapy – 1 tablet per day for the duration of the treatment. The above dosages are informational only, and may not be valid in your case. As such, only follow the prescribing health care provider’s directions.

Chlorquin Overdose

Chlorquin overdose may cause severe consequences and may be lethal. It is strongly suggested that you do not exceed the recommended dosage and do not take this medicine for longer than prescribed. Symptoms of an overdose with Chlorquin may include headache, nausea, vomiting, dizziness and drowsiness, respiratory arrest, circulatory collapse, visual disturbances extending to sudden loss of vision. In some cases, cardiac dysrhythmia, respiratory or circulatory failure may lead to the death of the patient.

Chlorquin Missed Dose

In case you have missed a dose of Chlorquin, it is strongly recommended to take it as soon as you remember, unless another dose of the medicine is almost due. In such cases it is best to completely skip the dose that you have missed and continue with your regular medication schedule, but you should consult your personal physician regarding the matter as further actions may be required.

Chlorquin Side Effects

Typically, following your prescriber’s intake indications and using the recommended Chlorquin dose is not likely to cause any severe side effects. Minor occurrences such as headaches, nausea, vomiting, anorexia, abdominal cramps and diarrhea are possible, however they will go away shortly after starting the treatment.

In patients following high dose or long term therapy, more severe side effects may occur, including rashes, hair loss, blurring of vision or in rare cases retinal degeneration. Other side effects that have been reported include photosensitivity, polyneuritis, toxic epidermal necrolysis, heart rhythm disorders, hypotension, hearing impairment, agitation, confusion, delirium and hallucinations. It is best that you consult with your personal health care provider immediately when you experience any unexpected signs or symptoms at any point during your treatment with Chlorquin.

Chlorquin Drug Reactions

Chlorquin may interact with several types of medication. Antacids should not be taken within 4 hours of a Chlorquin intake as they may reduce the drug’s absorption into the organism. Cimetidine may affect the metabolism and elimination of the active substance. Ampicillin absorption may be affected by administration of Chloroquine, and the diploid rabies vaccine may not yield the expected response when administered during Chlorquin anti-malarial prophylaxis. Other anti-infective or anti-malarial agents may also interact with this drug. It is best that you let the prescriber know of any other drugs you are currently taking before starting a treatment course with Chlorquin.
