Pilopt Information

Pilopt is the brand name for a medicine based on Pilocarpine Hydrochloride, available under the form of eye drops in several concentrations (0.5%, 1%, 2%, 3%, 4% and 6%). Apart from the active ingredient, Pilopt also contains hypromellose, disodium edetate, sodium phosphate, sodium chloride, sodium acid phosphate, benzalkonium chloride and purified water.

This drug is known to act directly on the cholinergic receptors, causing a contraction of the iris sphincter muscle and leading to constriction of the pupil. Also, by inducing ciliary muscle constriction, this medicine allows a decrease of intraocular pressure.

Pilopt Indications

Pilopt is commonly employed by health care professionals in order to reduce intraocular pressure in patients suffering from certain affections of the eyes (for example glaucoma). Used in monotherapy or in combination with other medicines, this drug is equally effective, providing relief within 75 minutes (this may vary depending on the concentration used) and the effect will persist for a time period of 4 to 14 hours.

Pilopt may also be used in the treatment of other health problems that are not presented in this leaflet. Pilopt Warnings

You should not use Pilopt if you are hypersensitive to any of the active or inactive ingredients of this preparation, if you are suffering from certain medical conditions such as acute iritis where some of the drug’s effects are undesirable, or if you are suffering from, have a medical history of or are susceptible to retinal detachment. In the case of patients with bronchial asthma, special caution should be employed for the duration of the treatment.

While following a treatment course with Pilopt you may be required to undergo regular measurement of the intraocular pressure. It is also recommended to avoid driving or operating machinery at night or in poor lighting conditions.

At this time, the safety of Pilopt treatment during lactation or pregnancy has not been fully established. As such, it is recommended that you check with your personal physician before starting a treatment course with this medicine if you are pregnant, if you plan to become pregnant soon or if you are nursing a baby.

Pilopt Intake Guidelines

Wash your hands thoroughly with water and soap before and after each Pilopt application. When applying the medicine, use one finger to gently pull the lower eyelid away from the eye. Position the dropper above the eye and drip the recommended number of drops in the space created between the eye and the eyelid. After applying the drops, close the eye and apply pressure on the tear duct for roughly one minute.

In order to avoid contamination of the container, avoid touching the dropper to any surface, including the eye. Discard any remaining medicine 4 weeks after unsealing the container.

Pilopt Dosage

Consult your personal health care specialist regarding the exact Pilopt dosage that you need to employ for the duration of the therapy. He or she will tell you what concentration you should use, the number of drops to apply and the number of daily applications. In order to obtain the best results from the treatment, follow your prescribers’ directions closely. Pilopt Overdose

Pilopt is available only under the form of eye drops. This medicine may not be administered orally.

Avoid using this medicine in doses exceeding your prescriber’s recommendations. Exposure to high doses of this pharmaceutical preparation may result in severe consequences. If an overdose is suspected, contact the nearest clinic or hospital at once. Emergency medical assistance may be required even if no visible symptoms are present.

Pilopt Missed Dose

Although no serious detrimental effects are expected to occur if you accidentally miss an application of Pilopt eye drops, you should apply the missed dose as soon as you remember about it. However, in case it is almost time for the next scheduled application, it is best that you completely skip the missed medicine dose in order to avoid a cumulative effect of the applications. You may reduce the chances of forgetting to apply the Pilopt doses if you set up a strict application schedule, based on your daily agenda.

In case you missed more than one Pilopt application, you should consult with your personal health care professional in order to determine the appropriate actions that need to be taken. In such situations it is possible for the treatment to lose its effectiveness.

Pilopt Side Effects

Several side effects may appear while following a therapy course with Pilopt. These include, but are not limited to blurring of the vision, eye redness or watering, burning or stinging sensations, eye pain, headache, increased sweating, tremor, nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, breathing difficulties. If any of the above appear or if you experience any symptoms that are not included in the above enumeration, it is best that you inform your personal health care professional. Some of these symptoms are signs of severe adverse reactions and you may require immediate medical attention.

Pilopt Drug Reactions

Pilopt may interact with certain pharmaceutical preparations, especially when they are also applied ophtalmically. Examples of such medicines are Cyclopentolate or Belladonna alkaloids. You should inform your prescriber of any other medicines you are currently using. Please note that Pilopt may also interact with cosmetic or herbal products. As such, you should ensure that you are not using such products while following a treatment course with this substance.
