TAGAMET (CIMETIDINE)

Tagamet Information

Tagamet is a drug also generically called Cimetidine. Tagamet belongs to a wide class of drugs also known as histamine receptor antagonists. Tagamet’s main purpose is to decrease the quantity of acid that is produced by the patient’s stomach. Therefore, Tagamet is normally prescribed in the treatment of various types of ulcer or in the treatment of any other disorders in when the stomach produces abnormally high amounts of acid. Tagamet can also treat Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), which is known to cause heartburn (this happens when the acid produced by the stomach passes into the esophagus).

Taking this drug could make the patient more susceptible to Pneumonia (especially if you are suffering from other medical conditions).

You must inform your doctor if you are suffering from:

• Chronic lung disorders (such as asthma);
• diabetes;
• bone marrow suppression;
• liver disease;
• a very weak immune system;
• kidney disease.

If you are suffering from any of these disorders you may not be allowed to take Tagamet (or you might have to take a smaller dose).
Tagamet is a Category B FDA pregnancy drug. Therefore, a treatment with this drug during pregnancy should not harm an unborn child. However, you should discuss it with your personal physician before taking Tagamet if you are pregnant or are planning to be so. Tagamet (Cimetidine) is known to pass into breastmilk. Tagamet Intake Guidelines

Tagamet Side Effects

Tagamet’s dangerous side effects are:

• cough, chest congestion, fever, breathing trouble;
• blistering or red skin rash;
• abnormal bleeding or bruising, weakness;
• urinating less than normally;
• jaundice (yellowing of eyes or of the skin);
• feeling faint, disoriented, light-headed, or confused;
• rashes;
• irregular heartbeat;

Other less severe side effects are:

• feeling dizzy, agitated or depressed;
• breast tenderness or swelling (in men);
• muscle or joint pain;
• headache;
• skin rash;
• nausea, diarrhea, or constipation.

There are other side effects that have not been listed here. You must inform your doctor if you experience anything unusual or bothersome during or after your treatment with Tagamet.

Tagamet Drug Reactions

Ketoconazole (Nizoral), or any other drugs like Nizoral should be taken in 2 hours before Tagamet.

Tagamet is known to interact with some popular drug available in pharmacies. You should inform your doctor if you are following a treatment with any of these medicines:

• blood thinners (such as Coumadin or Warfarin);
• nifedipine (Adalat);
• phenytoin (Dilantin);
• metronidazole (Flagyl);
• chlordiazepoxide (Librium);
• propranolol (Inderal);
• diazepam (Valium);
• lidocaine (Xylocaine);
• theophylline (such as Slo-Bid, Theo-Dur, Bronkodyl);
• anxiety or depression medication such as imipramine (Tofranil), amitriptyline (Elavil), desipramine (Norpramin), clomipramine (Anafranil), nortripytyline (Aventyl).

If you are following a treatment with any of the drugs listed here, you might not be allowed to take Tagamet, or you may need to take in a smaller dose of the drug. Also, you doctor should monitor your treatment with Tagamet.
