Citanest is a solution used for injections. It is a sterile, isotonic and aqueous solution with a pH of 5-7. Single doses of this drug are preservative free and intended for single use only.

Citanest Indications

Citanest is primarily used for anesthetic techniques. They include:

• Local infiltration
• Major nerve blocks
• Minor nerve blocks
• Epidural block
• Arthroscopy

This drug is also widely popular for intravenous regional anesthesia. It may also be used for purposes not indicated here.

Citanest Warnings

Citanest is not advisable for patients who:

• Are hypersensitive to local anesthesia of the amide type
• Have congenital or idiopathic methaemoglobinaemia

Introduction of this drug should be closely supervised by a professional.

Citanest is not advisable to be used within the early months of pregnancy. It should not be used on pregnant women or women who are planning to be pregnant.

The amount of this drug that is passed into breast milk is yet to be known. It should not be administered to a nursing mother without proper approval of the doctor.

Citanest may temporarily impair locomotion and coordination. Employ caution when driving or operating machinery.

Citanest Overdose

Over dosage of Citanest may have effects in the central nervous system and the cardiovascular system.
The first symptoms of overdose of the central nervous system include the following:

• Circumoral paraesthesia
• Numbness of the tongue
• Lightheadedness
• Hyperacusis
• Tinnitus

Other side effects may also occur following the first symptoms. They include:

• Visual disturbance
• Muscular tremors
• Unconsciousness
• Grand mal convulsions
• Hypoxia
• Hypercapnia
• Apnea

Overdose of this drug may also have effects on the cardiovascular system. They include:

• hypotension
• Bradycardia
• Arrhythmia
• Cardiac arrest

Symptoms of overdose first occur in the central nervous system before progressing to the cardiovascular system. Effects of overdose on the cardiovascular system may already be dangerous.

If any of these symptoms occur, the patient might be experiencing overdose. Administration of Citanest should be immediately discontinued. Proper antidotes should be given afterwards.

Citanest Missed Dose

Since this drug is administered only when needed, overdose of this drug is not a problem. Your doctor should be consulted as to the proper dose of this medication. Do not administer this medication without proper professional supervision.

Citanest Side Effects

Citanest may cause allergic reactions such as

• Allergic dermatitis
• Bronchospasm
• Anaphylaxis

It may also cause neurological complications such as the following:

• Nerve trauma
• Neuropathy
• Anterior spinal artery occlusion
• Arachnoiditis

It may also cause these side effects:

• Nervousness
• Dizziness
• Blurred vision
• Tremor
• Drowsiness
• Tinnitus
• Numbness
• Disorientation
• Nausea and vomiting
• Methaemoglobineamia

Citanest may also have side effects that are not mentioned here. Inform your doctor if you experience anything unusual in your body while or after administration of this anesthetic.

Citanest Drug Reactions

Citanest should not be used along with the following medications:

• sulfonamides
• antimalarials and certain nitric compounds
• lignocaine
• mexiletine
• tocainide

Other medications may also interact with Citanest. Inform your doctor if you are taking any medication other than this drug.
