MACUGEN PEGAPTANIB SODIUM PFIZER

MACUGEN (PEGAPTANIB)

Macugen Information

Macugen is a well known medicine that is also called Pegaptanib. This drug is known to effectively decrease the level of a natural protein that can sometimes affect some of the eye’s cells. This protein can sometimes trigger blood vessel changes and swelling that may lead to blindness and macular degeneration. Therefore, this medicine is widely prescribed to patients who are in need of macular degeneration (that is usually age-related) treatment.

Macugen Indications

Macugen is a popular medicine that is usually prescribed in the treatment of elderly patients who are suffering from age-related eye macular degeneration. However, this medicine might also be used for other purposes that have not been listed here.

Macugen Warnings

You should not start using Macugen (Pegaptanib) if you are suffering from an eye infection. Before you start your treatment with this medicine, you should alert your personal physician if you are suffering from allergic reactions to this medicine, to any of its ingredients or to any other substances (such as dyes, foods, preservatives, etc).

Macugen is usually administered as a shot through a needle that is regularly placed directly into the patient’s eye. Your personal health care provider should give you this injection in a hospital or in another medical setting. This drug is usually used to treat one eye at a time. Such injections are usually administered every 6 weeks.

Before you receive a Macugen injection, you will probably be given a numbing drug in order to make you comfortable. You should also be treated with a powerful antibiotic in order to prevent the risk of developing an unwanted infection.

After you receive the injection, your personal physician should check your eyes at regular time intervals for the next half an hour. Other checks will probably be needed in the following days (regularly, in 2 and 7 days after the procedure).  While you are following a treatment with Macugen, you should protect your eyes (avoid exposing them to direct bright light).

Macugen is a category B FDA pregnancy drug. Therefore, a treatment with this medicine during pregnancy should not harmfully affect a growing fetus. However, you should ask for your physician’s opinion before you start a treatment with this medicine if you are currently breastfeeding an infant. It has not been clearly determined whether Pegaptanib’s main ingredients can pass into breast milk or not. It is not known if this medicine could affect a nursing infant. You should not start taking Macugen without your personal physician’s approval if you are currently breastfeeding a child.

Macugen Intake Guidelines

This medicine (Macugen) is regularly administered as an eye injection. In order to make sure that a treatment with this medication is actually helping your medical condition, your physician should regularly check your eye condition. You should avoid missing any of your doctor’s appointments. If you have been prescribed by your personal physician to take an antibiotic during your treatment with Macugen (in order to prevent a possible eye infection), you should take it for as long as your physician has told you to. If you have any further questions regarding your treatment with this drug, you should carefully read the instructions on the drug’s label or you should ask a doctor, a pharmacist or a nurse for further information.

Macugen Dosage

Your physician is the one who will determine the correct dose of Macugen that you should receive. The dose of this medicine is known to vary from one patient to another, because it depends on some factors such as age, body weight, severity of the disorder, general health condition, etc.

Macugen Overdose

If you suspect that you are suffering from Macugen overdose (if you suspect that you have been administered too much medicine), you are in need of immediate medical care. Go to the nearest poison control centre, to your local emergency room and alert your physician as soon as possible. We have no information regarding the possible side effects that could be triggered by an overdose of Pegaptanib; however, an overdose with this medicine is not supposed to trigger any lethal (life-threatening) effects.

Macugen Missed Dose

In order to get the best results from your treatment with Macugen you should receive it on a regular basis. You should avoid missing any of your appointments with your personal physician. However, if you miss one, you should call your doctor and ask him for further instructions.

Macugen Side Effects

If you are experiencing any signs of an unwanted (but possible) allergic reaction (such as breathing difficulties; hives; swelling of your face, tongue, lips, or throat), you should seek medical care as soon as possible.
Stop your treatment with this medicine and alert your personal physician at once if you experience any of these severe (but rare) side effects:

  • eye pain, irritation or redness;
  • discharge or drainage from your eyes;
  • vision problems or any other vision changes;
  • feeling that your eyes have become more sensitive to direct light.

You may continue your treatment with this medicine (but you should inform your personal physician) if you experience any of these less severe, but more common side effects:

  • cough;
  • diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, upset stomach;
  • dizziness, headache;
  • joint pain;
  • burning or painful burning urination.

Some other side effects that have not been listed (mentioned) here might also occur during a treatment with Macugen. Alert your physician immediately if you experience anything unusual or bothersome during your treatment with it.

Macugen Drug Reactions

Ask your personal physician if you may take any other medicines during your treatment with Macugen.
