Advil Information

Advil is a drug also generically known as Ibuprofen. This medicine belongs to a wide group (class) of drugs also known under the name of NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs). This medicine’s job is to reduce the number of hormones that are known to cause pain and inflammation in the patient’s body. This medicine is widely prescribed in the treatment of fever, inflammation or pain that is triggered by medical conditions such as toothache, headache, arthritis, back pain, minor injury, menstrual cramps, etc.

If you are following a treatment with an NSAID you might increase your risk of developing dangerous circulation or heart problems (these include stroke and heart attack). If you have to follow a prolonged treatment with an NSAID, this risk can increase. You must not take this drug after having a bypass surgery. A treatment with an NSAID is known to sometimes trigger intestines or stomach disorders, such as bleeding or perforation. These disorders can be lethal. Older adults are more prone to experiencing such severe side effects. You should not start taking Advil if you have allergic reactions to Ibuprofen, other NSAIDs or to aspirin.

Before you start taking Advil, you should inform your physician if you are suffering from:

• heart disease, high blood pressure, congestive heart failure;
• asthma;
• systemic lupus erythematosus;
• a history of stomach bleeding or ulcers;
• nose polyps;
• kidney or liver disorders;
• a blood clotting or bleeding disorder;
• if you are a smoker.

If you have any of the disorders that have been listed here, you may not be allowed to start taking Advil or you may need to take in a lower dose of the drug.

If you have been prescribed aspirin in order to prevent stroke or heart attack, you should avoid taking Ibuprofen, because this drug is known to diminish aspirin’s effectiveness. If you have to take these 2 drugs simultaneously, you should take Advil 8 hours before or 30 minutes after taking the aspirin. This is a category B FDA pregnancy drug, which means that a treatment with this medicine should not harm an unborn child.  However, taking this drug during the third trimester of pregnancy can sometimes cause birth defects. Ask a physician if it is safe to take this drug if you are pregnant or if you are planning to be so soon. It has not been clearly established if this drug’s ingredients can pass into breastmilk. Ask a physician if you may take Advil if you are breastfeeding an infant.

If you are experiencing circulations or heart problems (chest pain, breath shortness, weakness, vision or balance problems, slurred speech), you should seek immediate medical help.

You should not increase your dose of Ibuprofen without your physician’s approval. The maximum dose of Advil that can be prescribed to a patient (an adult) is 3200 mg per day (that are usually divided in 4 doses). If you are taking this medicine to get relief from fever, swelling or pain, you should use a much smaller dose of this medicine. You should avoid drinking alcohol during your treatment with this drug because it could increase the risk of developing stomach bleeding.

You should not take bigger doses of this medicine, because an overdose with this drug is known to damage the patient’s intestines and stomach. You should take Advil along with water, milk or food (this will decrease the risk of developing stomach upset). In order to ensure that you take in the correct dose of Advil, you should use a measuring device (such as a cup or a spoon). If you do not own such a device please buy one from your local pharmacy. If you are using the Advil suspension, you should shake it well before you measure the dose of the drug. This medicine should be stored away from heat and moisture. Store this drug in a place that is far from the reach of children and pets.
