Clotrihexal Vaginal Tablets Information

Clotrihexal is a white oblong-shaped tablet that is used to cure vaginal candidiasis. Its generic name is Clotrimazole.

Clotrimazole is a colourless, crystalline, weakly alkaline substance that is soluble in acetone, chloroform and ethanol. It is practically insoluble in water. It forms table salts with both organic and inorganic acids. Its melting point is 141°C - 145°C. It is not photosensitive but it is slightly hygroscopic.

Clotrihexal Vaginal Tablets Indications

Clotrihexal mode of action is on the cell membrane of the fungi, damaging the permeability barrier of the fungi.

There are cases when the first administration of Clotrihexal tablets is not successful, the second intake will eventually cure it. 8 out of 12 women have tested it and proved the successive intakes to be effective.

Studies have shown that using 14C-labelled Clotrimazole show penetration of about 3% of the recommended dose from normal or inflamed vaginal mucosa (peak serum level of 0.03 mg/mL) 24 hours after insertion of 100mg pessary.

Studies show that after vaginal insertions of one 500mg pessary resulted in the rise of plasma levels of Clotrihexal rose up to 10 ng/mL during the period of up to 72 hours after insertion. Concentrations of Clotrihexal will be visible in vaginal secretions up to 48 hours after insertion.

Clotrihexal Vaginal Tablets Warnings

If signs of local intolerance are visible, withdraw drug immediately and seek appropriate therapy with your doctor. Clotrihexal should not be taken orally. These are for intravaginal use only.

For Pregnant women, when they are in their first trimester, they can use Clotrihexal if the doctor advises that this is best action for their condition.

Studies have shown that pregnant women in their second or third trimester using Clotrihexal have no reported side effects for the unborn baby. But this study is not reliable for the sampling was only done on a small group of women.

Nursing Mothers should caution themselves with their infants if they are taking Clotrihexal. It is not known if Clotrihexal can have serious effects on the infant and whether it can be passed in to the breast milk or not.

Clotrihexal Vaginal Tablets Dosage and Administration

Clotrimazole cream and Clotrihexal pessaries can work hand in hand. Clotrimazole cream is used for the Candida vulvovaginitis or the infection of the peri-anal area. Application of the cream to the glans penis of the man can help prevent re-infection of the woman.

It is best to insert the pessary once every evening inside the vagina. For best results, use the plastic applicator especially with late pregnancies.

Treatments can vary as to a single Clotrihexal 500mg pessary, or six 100mg pessaries or three 200mg pessaries. If the first dosage does not prove successful, the second one will be.

It is advised that the treatment be monitored to avoid the forthcoming of the menstrual period because treatment should be complete before menstruation.

Clotrihexal should be stored in room temperature below 25 degrees Celcius.

Clotrihexal Vaginal Tablets Overdose

There are no reports of Symptoms of Overdose and Side Effects. If suspected Overdose is observed, seek medical attention immediately.

Clotrihexal Vaginal Tablets Missed Dose

If you have missed a dosage, apply Clotrihexal as soon as you remember. If the scheduled dosage is almost time, skip the missed dosage and take the next one. Do not double dose.

Clotrihexal Vaginal Tablets Side Effects

Adverse Effect: Some Patients complained to have drug-related effect when they were taking Clotrihexal.

Clotrihexal Side Effects: Mild Burning; Skin Rash; Lower Abdominal Cramps; Slight urinary frequency and Burning/Irritation of Sexual partner. If problems listed above are manifested, Clotrihexal can still be used but you should first talk to your doctor for advice as soon as possible.

There are no other reports of Harmful Drug Reactions with Clotrihexal.
