CYTOVENE (GANCICLOVIR)

Cytovene Information

Cytovene is a common drug that is also generically known under the name of Ganciclovir. This is a medicine that belongs to a wide class of drugs called antivirals. Such medicines are known to slow the cytomegalovirus’ growth and spread (this medicine is widely prescribed in order to treat and to prevent cytomegalovirus infections. Such infections are known to affect patients who are suffering from a suppressed immune system (for example patients who have AIDS but also organ transplant patients).

Cytovene Indications

Cytovene is a medicine that is widely prescribed in the treatment of cytomegalovirus infections. However, this drug can also be prescribed to treat or to prevent some other infections that have not been mentioned in this guide.

Cytovene Warnings

Before you start a treatment with Cytovene, you should inform your physician if you have:

  • allergic reactions to acyclovir (Zovirax) or to Ganciclovir;
  • kidney disorders;
  • low blood counts;
  • blood problems.

If you do have any of these disorders, you may not be allowed to start taking this medicine, or you may need to take in a lower dose of Cytovene.

Cytovene (Ganciclovir) is considered to be a category C FDA pregnancy drug. This means that it has not been established whether a treatment with this medicine could harm a growing fetus. However, when tested on animals, this drug has caused birth defects. Therefore if you are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant soon, you should ask for your doctor’s opinion before you start taking this drug. It has not been determined whether this medicine can pass into breast milk. However, you should ask for your doctor’s consent before you start taking this drug if you are breastfeeding an infant.
If you are injecting this medicine at home, your personal healthcare provider should give you detailed instructions and recommendations regarding how and where you should inject the drug. If you fail to understand some of his or her instructions, you should ask a doctor, a pharmacist or a nurse. Do not stop your treatment with Cytovene unless your doctor has advised you to, even if you start feeling better after a few days.

Cytovene Intake Guidelines

Ask your doctor how and when you should take Cytovene. You must not disobey any of the instructions that your physician has given you. If you fail to understand some of his or her instructions, you should ask a doctor, a pharmacist or a nurse. You should take in your oral drug doses with milk or food to make sure the medicine is completely absorbed in the body.

You should not use a drug that has particles in it, that is expired or that has discolored. The drug should be stored at the average room temperature, away from heat, moisture and direct sunlight. You should keep Cytovene away from the reach of children and pets.

Cytovene Dosage

Ask your physician to calculate the correct dose of Cytovene that works best for your condition. Do not make any alterations to the dose that you were prescribed. The correct dose of Ganciclovir is known to vary from one person to another (it depends on age, weight, general health condition, etc).

Cytovene Overdose

If you suspect that you are suffering from an overdose with this drug you might be in need of immediate medical care. Contact your local poison control centre and make sure your doctor knows all the necessary details. Cytovene overdose symptoms are known to include diarrhea, seizures, kidney damage and bone marrow damage (increased chance of infection, paleness, chills, fever, liver disorders (yellowing of the eyes and of the skin, abdominal pain), etc.

Cytovene Missed Dose

In order to get the best results (effects) from your treatment with this medicine, you should take it on a regular basis. However, if you happen to miss any of your prescribed doses of Cytovene, you should take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for another scheduled dose, it is best that you skin the dose that you have missed and proceed with your regular dosing schedule. Avoid taking extra doses of this medicine without your physician’s consent.  

Cytovene Side Effects

Some dangerous and serious side effects that affect the blood have been sometimes reported by patients who were following a treatment with Cytovene. A number of decreased blood cells levels (white blood cells, platelets, red blood cells) have occurred. Your personal physician should monitor your blood condition with regular blood tests.

You should stop your treatment with Cytovene and seek medical care at once if you experience any of these severe side effects:

  • allergic reactions (breathing difficulties; throat closing; swelling of the lips, face, tongue; sometimes even hives);
  • fatigue and paleness could be anemia signs;
  • unusual bruising or bleeding;
  • infection symptoms, fever;
  • numbness.

There are also other less serious (thus, less dangerous) side effects that are more common. You may continue your treatment with Cytovene, but you should alert your physician if you have:

  • nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, or decreased appetite;
  • itching;
  • increased sweating;
  • infertility or decreased sperm production.

Some other side effects that have not been listed here can also occur. You should alert your personal physician if you experience anything bothersome during your treatment with Cytovene.
