OMNIPAQUE

Omnipaque Information

Omnipaque (also known under the name of iohexol) is a contrast agent. The contrast agents are drugs which contain iodine and are used by doctors from all over the world in order to effectively (accurately) diagnose some medical conditions. The product’s leaflet should contain some information regarding this drug’s way of action.

Omnipaque Indications

Omnipaque is usually prescribed by personal health care providers, doctors and pharmacists in order to diagnose the following medical conditions: angiography, ateriography, myelography, venography, urography, aortography, cardiac ventriculography and angiocardigraphy.

This medication may also be used to serve other purposes than those mentioned above, for further information patients are recommended to ask their doctor, physician or pharmacist or to read the medication’s label.

Omnipaque Warnings

Patients who are allergic to iodine and to products which contain iodine (such as cabbage, seafood, iodized salt) or to other contrast agents should not take this medicine. Patients should also inform their doctor about other allergies if they have any.

Women who are pregnant, planning to become pregnant or are breast feeding should discuss with their doctor before beginning the treatment with Omnipaque. The intake of this medicine is known to affect the thyroid tests. Patients who want to perform a thyroid test should tell their doctor that they have taken Omnipaque.

Children and elderly people are generally more sensitive then adults and using this medicine can increase their risk of developing side effects. Their parents should ask their personal health care providers whether it is all right for their children to use this medicine.

Patients should inform their personal health care provider if they are suffering from any of the following medical conditions: asthma, diabetes mellitus type II, phechromocytoma (also abbreviated PCC), high blood pressure, liver and kidney disease, myeloma (also known under the name of bone cancer) and overactive thyroid.

Omnipaque Intake Guidelines

Patients are advised to question their personal health care provider or pharmacist regarding the exact way in which they should use this medicine in order to obtain visible results during and after their treatment with Omnipaque. Depending on the type of Omnipaque the patients are taking (oral or injections), the personal healthcare provider will explain to them how to take every dose of this medicine. The oral Omnipaque should be taken with a full glass of water in order to enable its intake; combining this drug with food will avoid stomach problems.

Patients should take this medicine after dinner one evening before the medical examination. Patients should not eat or drink anything (except water) after taking this drug. Your personal physician can ask you to keep a special diet or to take other medicines before the examination.

Omnipaque Dosage

Patients should ask their physician to tell them exactly how to take their prescribed dose of Omnipaque in order to obtain the best results during and after the treatment. Patients are recommended to listen carefully to the doctor’s indications and under no circumstances to deviate from them. The personal health care provider will prescribe the patients the proper dose for their medical condition.

Omnipaque Overdose

If a patient suspects that he has taken an overdose of Omnipaque he should immediately announce his personal health care provider or physician and the local poison control center. His physician can ask him or her to remain in the hospital for several days for further, detailed investigations and for the adequate symptomatic treatment. The intake of higher doses will not induce a more accurate diagnosis.

It is well known that any medication taken in excess has consequences. The most common clinical symptoms which an individual who has taken an overdose of Omnipaque may experience include the following: severe diarrhea, nausea, headaches and vomiting.

Omnipaque Missed Dose

As the use of this product is only recommended before a special clinical evaluation, missed doses of Omnipaque are unlikely to be accused by any patient. However, if such an accident does arise, you should alert your prescribing medical professional and postpone your diagnosing procedure.

Omnipaque Side Effects

Patients may experience side effects which do not require medical attention, especially if they are following a therapy course with this remedy. These side effects can disappear during the treatment, but in some cases they are persistent and get worse. If any of the following side effects persists, the patients are recommended to announce their personal health care provider: diarrhea, nausea, headaches, dizziness and vomiting.

Individuals are recommended to immediately announce their physician or pharmacist in case they experience the following side effects after using Omnipaque: abdominal pain, painful and difficult urination, heartburn, stomach spasms, abdominal cramps, and urinary incontinence.

This is not a complete list with all the side effects that a patient who is under treatment with Omnipaque may experience. For further information patients are recommended to discuss with their caregiver, pharmacist or to read to medication’s label.

Omnipaque Drug Reactions

Patients who are taking medications such as Phenothiazine, antihistaminic drugs and anti-nausea medicines should not use Omnipaque without discussing first with their personal health care provider. There are some medications which must be stopped within a few days before the myelography, such drugs include: CNS stimulants, major tranquilizers, antidepressants, antipsychotics, tricyclic drugs and MAO inhibitors.

This is not a complete list of the drugs which interact with Omnipaque, this is why it is important for the patients to inform their physician about all the medications that they are taking including: herbal products, vitamins and over the counter medications.
